Today I hurt the man I love
As only I can
For I know his vulnerability
Where he bleeds the most
I saw the pain I created
And I savored it
I hurt the man who covered me from the rain,
Who lifted me from the pavement when I couldn't walk,
Who allowed me into his heart, and life, and home,
Who said, "All that is mine is yours"
Who is brave, and noble, and honorable
Who, even wounded, loves me still
And I have no clever couplet, no pithy rhyme,
To save me, or excuse me, or redeem me
There is only the contaminated demon in my mirror
To exorcise.
