One day we will be, forever silent. Where would we be without poetry? As a child, I buried my heart, drained from games death would play - in adulthood, it still refuses to resurface. Grim Reaper hides in the corner of my eyes. Is there such a thing as an overdose of sadness? Because sometimes pain has no metaphor, so we bleed the seeds of dormant blossoms. I stare at a forgotten photograph, at a boy I once knew from my past, scruffy curly hair with tense, timid, tired eyes. His life is a fuzzy blur, but I feel his misery. Some memories are merely reflections, some reminders, returning within season. Unwanted souvenirs of how unfair life can be. When skies are clouded like ashen smoke, all I hear is untuned violin strings, screeching - violent, like tangible bursts of thunder. An orchestra of lightening forcing an explosions of unerupted emotions. Like pain placed in a paper bag, scattered like a dead man's ashes. I've come to terms with people not seeing beyond the smile. Still I search for love in freezing rain, to prevent from numbing sensations. In the darkness of death, I still remember the white lights - and my mother's rainbow love maybe that's what saved me. I realise the reality of adversity. I'm an advocate of its lessons - because, i'm a definition of each battle, yet I know the war is far from over. Poetry is the perfect way to release suppressed emotions. My heart desires to beat like a flutist's musical notes - like a kite floating higher and higher against brutal winds. Silent One 4 December 2020 This is an example of my current contest called catharsis poetry. I attempted to use poetry techniques like light alliteration and assonance.

To me this speaks of a little boy who had to grow up too fast. He is sad as a man and feels cheated of a happy childhood. A fine write my friend but a very sad one. Hope it's not you. God Bless, JB

Well said. It's been too long since I've read your work. Thank you for sharing. Poetry is like breathing for us poets, long enough away from it and we forgot what it was like to truly breathe.

yes you are right, it numbs the pain, but it is avoidance. It would be better to tell our innermost thoughts to someone we are intimately connected with, not hiding behind a poetic smokescreen to a group of strangers. Still, if it helps one feel better by being able to release supressed emotions, then it is a gift in the moment. I hope you are well.

Hi Silent One! You are right. Poetry is very therapeutic, so where would we be without it, especially when memories pop up like “unwanted souvenirs”? Well put!

Another masterpiece of a beautiful sadness, poetry is a release I do relate to the little boy, strange how some harsh memories resurface, but we kick them to the curb with a cathartic write! Loved this one it's a fave for me!

This is beautifully written and so well expressed. Avery touching piece letting one glimpse your soul. In truth were it not for my close relationship with my Savior I would probably be dead or in the loony bin by now. God Bless my friend. JB

Illuminating introspection this heart-piercing poem be, SO! An abundance of muse dancing phrases ... Is there such a thing as an overdose of sadness? Because sometimes pain has no metaphor, so we bleed the seeds of dormant blossoms. Brilliant poetry, my dear friend. Love and Happy Holidays

My poetic friend. I believe our early years mark us for life and play a major part in how we create our future. I believe any life...worth living...is a journey of roses and thorns. Poetry...for me is medicinal. You are such a gifted writer. Wishing you the best year ever in 2021. ~ Elaine

Hello Silent One, I sense that you had a sad childhood. Okay my childhood was not good either. I have learned to put my past behind me. Question: Words of a son that keep coming in my thoughts are. Don't Stop Thinking of Tomorrow. What is the title of the song By Pink Floyd? Thank you. Good Morning. Darlene

Dear S.O, you seem down my friend, it is said that its OK to not be OK. During this last year, it had been difficult, and we don't know what a waits us and how tomorrow will be - poetry does numb the pain, and I think we have such a wonderful greoup of friends on soup, I never though it possible, but I have more friends on soup than I have had in many years. It humbles me. I enjoy your Poetry SO so very much. Happy Christmas to you and yours my friend. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

I occasionally glance at a photo of that boy from my youth. Scruffy hair, tense, tired eyes. We should compare pics sometime and rejoice we've made it this far. Have a Happy. Thanks again for sharing with all of us on the soup. One of your fans, oldbuck

You really made it seem as if your heart was laid bare here. It truly can be medicinal when we can get those words out the way we want them to come out... Going back to just working on forms new to me until I can write something I feel is truly from me :)

WoW! Silent, This is an exceptional example for your contest. You bared you your soul. Amid such sadness, there was a ray of hope in the form of poetry. I agree with your title poetry can numb the pain but it can also heal a wounded soul. Excellent job. If you weren't hosting the contest, this would be a front runner. Enjoy the rest of your day:-)Alexis

wow, I wish I could have done mine this way: so elegant and poignant. Anyway, I am generally a happy person not prone to depression, so this kind of topic is hard for me. I didn't want to bore people again with my horrible condition brought on by Prolia (the only thing really making me sad), so I did the only other topic nagging me to death these days!!
