Poetry

I don't know that poetry
needs be anything but poetry,

while myself realizing
that definition greatly varies –

but I have seen acrobatic
words that flop like
wingless birds,

and predictable political
soap-boxing – not my vote
if lacking a fine musical note,
with a rose in the orator's hair
for those, like me, who otherwise
wouldn't care –

aside from all else
poetry should be beautiful
first, even when the subject
is misery, poetry having ability
to spiritual transcend

yet purely gymnastics does have
a poetic flair

and politics has its tuneful trumpeting
elephants and rhythmic donkey braying,
though
written mostly
for whoever is paying

Make it beautiful in its prettiness or ugliness. Make it poetry! :)

Great work Joe! Yes, poetry means different things to different people. For me, there has to be a deep expression of the poet's feelings delivered with a certain amount of intensity that can trigger emotion in the reader...and I'm beginning to sound a little pretentious so I'll stop there :) Suffice to say your opening line sums it all up perfectly for me: "I don't know that poetry needs be anything but poetry.." Yes! I'm off to read this again. Cheers - Gary.

For sure; the reader immediately becomes aware if the work is a living extension of the poet, having intensity, honesty of emotion. Great comment, Gary. Thank you.

Good Morning Joe. Yes poetry should be of beauty and emotion even when expressing darkness. I agree. I always thought poetry expresses positiveness in some way even when stating loss or sadness. It was a pleasure turning to your page and entry. Have a wonderful day. Keep enjoying the true meaning of poetry. Take Care. Blessings (smile)

Hi Lisa; I think your collusion is a valid, profound observation. No matter the subject, if poetry does not express Verse's subtle transcending spirit of deeper, often indefinable beauty -- most ethereal when far too vague for common surface definition...yet vividly felt, there in the soul of a work...tacitly if not overtly uplifting despite the even desperate nature of the subject -- if such beautiful spiritual enigma is not present...then it is not the best poetry has to offer. Blessing my friend.

There's wisdom in them there words, Joe. Good for us to hear. I think of poetry as the way I allow others to see, hear, and feel the toughts of my heart and soul. It's communicating through heartfelt emotions and intellect. Blessings my friend, Bill
