Once Upon a Dream

In the toss and turn of sleep, Where willows bloom, and roses weep-- I saw a vision bathed in white, Dispelling darkness with her light. And in my misty reverie, Where what is not, can always be-- She took my hand, as well my heart, And I did love her from the start. For I beheld through slumber's grace The beauty of her smiling face-- A work of art from gods here lent, A stunning figure, heaven sent. With eyes that caused my soul to burn, And in a fever left to yearn-- Her hair spun on an angel's loom, Exquisite as a lyre's plume. And as I reached to touch her face, I found that there was only space-- Just love forbidden by my sleep, A taste of rapture, not to keep. But still I try to set it right, To tell the story of that night-- Of how a vision let me see, The beauty of eternity. Yet my words are frail, and weak, And fail her, of whom I speak-- For how can one describe the sun, Or portray a dream, when it is done. Yet in my mind she'll always be, The marvel who appeared to me. Now blessed torment I must wear-- Not all to have, but just a share.

Debbie, Hi! How are you? I apologize for not visiting of late, but I work for the Bureau of Homeland Affairs (for now), and they sent me to Langley for a week. Add to that, the private tutoring I do for Charlie Sheen and others...and my prep for my Phd courses in the fall, and you understand. Glad you liked this poem from back in the day...xxx...Mel :)

Mel, the feeling, will always be there. This one blew me away, into a taste of forbidden dreams. Powerful expression!!! I enjoy reading this poem, the flow and rhyme is the best I've read today. However, I am moved by the sadness, or should I say void feeling, left from a dream that slips away. I know how it is, to dream a dream that feels perfect, then when describing, it's not the same.... If you can't touch it...... Enjoyed... Linda

Hi Linda. So good of you to read this--not many have; although it was read by Dr. Ledbetter at the Honors Convocation my last year of school. He read it anonymously to several hundred people--faculty, regents, press, dignitaries, alumni, etc. and when he finished, he introduced me and had me stand to a grand ovation. Wow--what a moment! Got $500.00 and a plaque. Love always...xox... Mel

My pleasure Mel. i on the other hand never put pen to paper until my husband had cancer surgery in November - the fist poem i wrote was splendid isolation - on how I felt being so far away from home and so isolated and vulnerable. it wasn't the first poem i posted though. Did not join here till February - had a few poems a friend put on '2facedbook' a lovely lady called Jenny brewer saw them and said i should post here

I thank you, and my ego thanks you :) How is my newest, bestest friend? I sincerely appreciate your kind comment. I studied poetry in college and had imagery beaten into me, so I try to include it here or there. And rhyming, that's what I do--that's what I hear, if that makes any sense. Thank you for reading the poem, and I'm glad you liked it. Hugs ;) mel
