Ode To the Coffeemaker

To the little machine, that's so hard to clean
And sits alone on the shelf,
I'm thankful to you, for that potion you brew
That turns me into myself.
You may be a squatter, but I still give you water
Some grounds and then flip a switch
My steps I retrace, brush teeth, wash face
Come back and drink 'til I twitch

You're always ready, you drip so steady
And that smell is heaven sent.
You always work quiet and help with my diet,
My hunger you circumvent.
I have heard you stutter, sometimes spit and sputter
But in truth, that's all on me
If I do my part, then simply push start
Then you do the rest for free.

You start everyday helping me find my way
As I wake in my early brain fog
Then at noon, then night, you continuously delight
You're my hero, my silent demigod
Life wasn't the same before you came
I just couldn't seem to wake up
So here's to you and all that you do
A Toast! Hang on, let me fill my cup.

Not sure whether i commented on this ode already, but who cares. All hail the coffee maker and the wondrous liquid it conjures up. Tea in the morning, coffee in the afternoon, and a life of equilibrium. Nice poem- thanks Daniel.

This was fun to read! Yes, our worn out coffee makers do deserve some love and praise. You're right. Your first stanza is my favorite. There are so many different "potions" out there, mine being a Vermont blueberry blend. How about yours? I have a sign on my kitchen wall that reads, "Give me the coffee and no one gets hurt" :) I will be reading your poem to my coffee maker, my brown liquid maker first thing tomorrow! She will feel appreciated!

hello Marikate:) Always makes me smile to see a new face. When it comes to coffee? I like mine hot. That is the only criteria I have. I used to be an over the road truck driver. That was my milk. Say hello to your "old" coffeemaker for me. Might be kin to mine.

Daniel, I'm so far behind on commenting I'm in front of myself... congrats for POTD 2 weeks ago, a worthy recipient. I totally relate to this ode to the coffee maker - the sign on my desk says "Instant Human, Just Add Coffee". I especially enjoyed the line "come back and drink till I twitch" and also the great ending. A toast to Mr. Coffee! Cheers ~ John

Wish I had written this, though I'm an instant coffee person, not into those. fancy (and expensive) coffee makers. As a diabetic I'm llowed on cup per day, usually at bfeakfast, then I start my day. French by birth, tea was the family beverage. Only later did I start enjoying coffee. / Maurice
