Horror squeezes my chest like pliers on a straw ... There - out there in the black, Something moved ... again ... Just briefly, a flash of pale in the ink, But enough so I knew it was real. I was standing now, near the sliding glass door, But before - just minutes ago, I had been laying on the couch in the living room ... I'd fallen asleep watching the TV, And I awoke to darkness ... near silence. I had heard a tapping in my deep dreaming, Regular, like a dripping faucet, (In fact, that's what it was in the dream), And when I came to full consciousness it continued. My back was to the glass and deck when I awoke, Face buried in a throw pillow, So I had stretched and turned my head To glance over my shoulder at where the sound was coming from, And though the timer on the TV had turned itself off, There was still a small amount of orange light From the lava lamp in the corner, Just enough so I could see IT ... A hideous, smiling face with empty, black eyes, Pressed against the glass, to make it all the more horridly distorted, Glaring teeth chiseled to points, dripping with red clotted matter, And at the very top of the glass - the very top! (Which made it at least seven feet tall!) Or perhaps it was floating ... but it couldn't be! I turned back and buried my face in the pillow like a frightened child, And the tapping stopped ... Heart thrumming out of my chest like a hammer, head pounding ... A dream! It must be a dream, I had thought, So I slowly turned my head again to glance back ... It was still there! And this time it slapped two hands against the glass With a thunderous "whack!" that assured me I was awake, And I could see they were also wet with crimson, Streaking the glass panels and splattering ... And then gone - just like that! I turned my head back and buried my face again, Breathing so hard it was all I could hear - like a wash in my ears. I lay there for what seemed like forever, Hoping beyond hope that the sun would soon rise, Or my heart would burst ... But the dark remained until I could bear it no longer ... In a surge of adrenaline I got up and went to the glass and slapped it As if in defiance, desperate for a conclusion ... I KNEW it was still out there, Taunting me ... watching ... I slapped again ... and again!! I went from door-panel-to-door-panel, whacking on the glass, Then to the windows to the side, smacking them as well ... I even yelled, so terrified that I HAD to know! Where WAS it? What was it doing?!? And finally, out there in the indigo night, now raining, I saw the flash of its pale face inside a hood, Far above the ground and still as death, My god - It was so tall! But smiling, yet ... And even now horribly distorted, as if it were still pressed against glass ... "Come ON!" I yelled ... "Come ON!!!" And it came ... * FOURTEENTH PLACE in the "IT" Poetry Contest, John Lawless, Sponsor. *

Ah, er....Greg.....please keep "It" to yourself. As I read this I could hear Rod Steiger in the background saying: "welcome to the twilight zone." A very scary bit of penmanship here. Thanks for entering "IT" in the contest

Hi my friend. Mine was called The Untamed Mare. What strikes me about yours, is your remarkable memory. I forget in part. Brilliantly descibed with the devil in the detail. Congratulations again.

Thank you so much, Buddy, your opinion is very important to me - I just went back to yours for a refresher and it came back quickly, as it is a fav, (is that what you mean about my memory? Not sure I understand that part - please forgive). I'm glad you liked this one, as I haven't done a lot of thriller-type poems. No need to congratulate me, though, as I haven't won anything with this one yet. Blessings, my good friend! :-)

Wow! Powerful write for this captivating story, Greg!! I love your approach right at the end - clearly terrified, but not succumbing to the fear. Great stuff! Regards, John!

Oh my my, such a terrible terrifying dream or reality?? How I wish you could end it in a more positive way, maybe a part two, where you overcome this... Well, I'm so scared I don't make much sense...anyway, congratulations on your win, Greg, this sure was apt for the contest, a nightmare stalker..

Very kind of you, Jo, and I'm so pleased you liked it! I MAY continue the story, though I can see it getting scarier before it resolves into the light ... it should end in a positive way, I think ... ultimately. Thanks, my friend! :-)

Indeed - good one, Viv! Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed my little foray into horror - a new area for me, (though I have written a lot of dark poetry) ... it was fun! Blessings, friend! :-)

Well, I know that this poem is a result of your real nightmare, so I know you are really brave to write about it, Greg:)

LOL - I was actually calling the thing, (in my actual dream), because I was so terrified that I wanted to get it over with ... I'm like that with ANYthing negative or frightening - I want to face it as soon as possible and get it DONE, otherwise it just eats at me, so it's more about being a coward in reality, lol. Glad you enjoyed it, Buddy - I haven't written much in the "scary" genre yet. I like the pun, too, ha! :-)

Riveting tale of home alone with the IT as the stalking being. I enjoyed reading this one! Congratulations for your win! Way to put up a fight in the end.

Thank you so much, Kristina - I really had no intention of this being about Stephen King's "It", but rather that the person in the story does not know what the creature is, so uses the term "it" to describe it, however, the "It" creature from King and the movies is pretty scary and fits the description I used, so I'm fine with folks taking it that way. It was an ACTUAL dream I had recently, but in the dream I never saw the creature, I just knew something was out there. Glad you liked it, Friend! :-)

Dark, Mysterious , Suspense Blood and Gore. You had me on the edge of my seat In fact I was going to watch the remake of IT, but am having second thoughts now. Will I survive the nightmares? Greg, I can see why this got first place. Congratulations on a well deserved win...Maria

Thank you so much, Maria, that's very kind of you, and I'm so thankful for your wonderful comments! This is a rather new genre for me, so I wasn't sure I'd pull off the whole "scary" thing. This was an ACTUAL dream I had recently, so in that respect I just followed my pen! Blessings, my friend! :-) <3

Thank you so much, Silent One, for reading and liking my poem ... and more thanks for the honor. This was fun! I haven't written much in this genre, (I've done some dark pieces, but not scary), and I wasn't sure of how it would come together or be received. So appreciated!

Oh, this is so good, Greg! Was it the grim reaper, or the terror of a stalker. I could see where you would just want to get the confrontation over with. Loved it!!!

Thank you so much, Kim - for some reason I've always had to confront negative things right away ... if there's a seriously bad or negative issue in my life, I HAVE to get it resolved as soon as humanly possible, or it eats away at me and I can do nothing else ... the anxiety of worrying about it just paralyzes me, so I HAVE to face it head-on immediately. So pleased you liked my story!

Gee Greg you wrote a gripping deep dark tale which was so descriptive I wanted to hide. very well penned!!:-) hugs jan xx

Thank you, Jan, so happy that I scared you! Well, you know what I mean, lol - I'm glad I was successful with the genre - it's only the second scary story I've written, and it was fun! I wanted to make it longer, but I knew I'd lose people if I did. Blessings, Friend! <3

Ah, this, I believe, is what the grim reaper could be like! Very frightening indeed! I really enjoyed reading your frightening poem here this morning! You have written a truly scary poem, one that I could have nightmares myself from (But I won't, I promise)! I believe you have masterfully created a magnificently devilish piece! What a lovely poem, Great Work!!

That is such an awesome comment coming from you, my friend, and if you find it worthwhile I know I've done something right, (in a scary way, haha!) If I can scare you, I can scare anyone! I haven't written many stories, and only one other that was scary, (for your contest), so it's a fun and challenging exercise - blessings, Friend! :-)

Thank you, Mo, I had a bit o' fun with thin ... and purged a nightmare I just had, lol. Kind of hard to build suspense in such a short story, but that's the challenge, I guess. Glad you liked it! :-)
