New Start For Captain Mazy

Wading through flooded streets as hurricane rain poured A man fell into the flow when sharp thunder roared As a journalist reporting live from the scene I saw lightning crack through the sky, heard the man scream “Is he homeless?” I asked the emergency crew The director shook his head; the answer he knew “He lives in our park now, but served in Vietnam He saved his entire unit from the Viet Cong.” The team pulled him from the gutter to the shelter I brought him tea, forgot I was a reporter I asked why he’d screamed, his memory seemed hazy “Did you hear the bombs drop?” asked Captain Bob Mazy The emergency director took me aside “We call him Crazy Mazy,” he did confide He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder Can’t live with the lives he took following orders.” When Hurricane Kate passed o’er the Gulf Coast I’d seen much destruction, but remembered Mazy most His story I broadcasted and vets contacted me The donations poured in; so many gave freely Soon we’d accumulated twenty-five grand Just enough to buy Mazy an acre of land Then people from his home state gathered one weekend To build him a home, much effort they expended Several social workers set up counseling services To meet all his needs, everyone made concessions Local stores gave him clothing, food, even a job No longer “Crazy Mazy,” he was now just Bob A gentle man who soon overcame all his fears On Memorial Day, he was greeted by cheers Accolades he’d never heard when he returned from Nam But attitudes had changed and people’s hearts had warmed

Amazing story. My brother has PTSD from Nam. My best friend has 23% of his heart working. He was shot 3 times in Nam. I was one of the lucky ones, a 30 year career and never saw combat. I salute Captain Mazy. Vince

Exceptional Carolyn. Can I find a better word, nope - the above will suffice. I find your writing so darned enjoyable. The subject matter you have used, highlights the out there situation that Hurricane Katrina brought ashore. Good luck in Carol's contest....)

A beautiful story Carolyn. It should be a winner. It all depends on the judge. Thank you for your comments on my "Rain". I had fun with that one and I am not sure everyone 'got' it but you did. Love, Joyce

Superb my friend. You have created a very motivating and inspiring story. It would create a wonderful effect for those, who remain neglected, isolated & forgotten, because no such reporters take pains to bring their glorious acts in limelight. Alas if we can have such Reporters! There are many Captain Bob Mazy, who still needs some love and tender care in almost every society. Hats off to you for such a lovely creation & my best wishes for your entry. Love and best wishes always..Ravindra CD

Great for Crazy Mazy. I live a block from Vets Hospital in Saginaw. The place is full up full time. Good reminder, Carolyn. Let's not forget Korea. The boys from Korea are generally forgotten in the wake of Viet Nam. Hard to disregard a long winter in Saginaw. So many who can afford it move to Florida during the winter monthsl. After weeks and weeks of gray it's hard to keep cheerful. LOve, Dave

well, I suppose you created this one, but it sure had me fooled until I saw it was Carol's contest at the bottom. It would be nice if such an event actually happened. I guess it does quite a bit and we never hear these wonderful stories on the news, only the negative crap. You did so well with this, Carolyn. I just know you will do well. LUv, Andrea

Very touching...I knew a Canadian soldier who was similar......wounded in the head in WW II and suffering from some resultant brain damage, he was know as Crazy Larry by all the local kids....he had a pension but there was no upwelling of help like for your Mazy.....your poem touched the memory and sent me back thirty years...thank you for the trip...and very.good luck in the contest.....best wishes...Syd

When veterans returned from Viet Nam, they were met by jeers instead of cheers. Even if we hate warfare, we need to show our appreciation to our military. I hope our soldiers returning from the Middle East receive the recognition and services they deserve. Good luck in the contest, Diane

Oh my Carolyn! This one gave me goosebumps! I wonder how many cases like this go un-noticed in reality, most of the time it needs folk to sit back and think of how these people are feeling and why they feel that way - there are so many help groups around these days, there simply is no excuses acceptable for not helping the likes. I hope this poem goes a long way in helping todays forgotten hero's that remain, that they might find new ways to live their lives to the fullest possible again! x

Thank you Carolyn, my friend for your kind comment on Sky Disc of Nebra! I just entered it for your and James' contest. Here they sell all different kinds of jewellery with a small Nebra Sky Disk. But not only the disc was a great discovery, also those associated fins which were very good condition. Have a great week and best of luck with this well written piece in Carol's contest!...Love, Gert
