Nearer My God

Nearer My God (The Band Played On) "Nearer, My God, to Thee" played on. . . calmly played by eight who stood upon A sinking deck. That fearless band Just played at nobody’s command As if in strange oblivion! Surely some serenity was drawn That night by all those hanging on To hope and hearing strains so grand. . . Nearer my God. They vanished long before the dawn, But for those eight, a prize was won. For though they’d not return to land, They’d all been strong and selfless and Would know a better place anon. . . Nearer my God. For Paula Swanon's Contest: Just Poetry

Hi Andrea. What a magnificent write. Strikes chords in me on so many levels. As an ex fisherman and seaman the water holds an everlasting hold on my thoughts. As a musician the power and the ability of music to sooth savaged souls is something that I believe in. Thank you for writing this and the very best of luck in the contest. Eamon

Andrea, this is beautiful and haunting. An incredible tribute to those brave men. The last line, carrying much more meaning than its simple three words for those men, and you have captured this so well... Very good.

A fantastic and wonderful entry to the contest. Of course I am not quite conversant with the .." Near, My God, to thee" but I can read and interpret what it is. Andrea
