My Heart Better Fares

My Heart Better Fares . . . The heart better fares you say when it cowers not so all sails deployed you chartered a relentless course for my heart but it was not the intended stir in me you caused for of such love games devoid I desperately try to avoid any and all encounters you seek and if your sea weathered banner sends me scampering, it is because you see, as I regretfully but so bluntly need to say, I neither wished nor relished your forceful attention and do gladly welcome the sight of your disappearing flag.
For all the young girls and women out there who feel they have become the source of relentless, forceful, and unwelcome attention, try to be kind, but stay strong and stand your ground.

Thanks, Verlecia. The young man described above probably thought my daughter was playing hard to get not realizing that his forceful attention had from the start turned her off.

I APPLAUD THE MESSAGE IN THIS POETIC GEM MY FRIEND. Yes, far too often women are treated with disrespect. Far too often men do so to shame them in public or to try to control them. A gentlemen, any honorable male will not only not do such evil but will defend when innocent women that are so accosted. A7 and a fav.

Thank you for your wonderful supportive words Robert and your generous 7. Whenever possible, I believe both men and women should support the victim:)

A very creative way to set boundaries that must be respected. I taught my son to be a gentleman and more parents need to teach their sons, not only their daughters how to respect others. You conveyed this well Anne-Marie. By the way...I also have three daughters. ; ) 7

Connie, I wish more parents were like you, because I can assure you (I was a H.S. teacher for many years) that some young men are greatly lacking in manners, self-restraint, and common sense. But many a time I would come home and announce to my girls that I wanted to marry them off to the most wonderful men ever . . . young men like your very son, I am sure:)

I loved the last line, is sad when people dont respect the boundaries of others.

Thank you so much for your comments Arthur. There are too many lines needlessly breached, especially among young people.

So true Anne-Marie...on my first walk around the lakes this Spring in Minneapolis...as mentioned in my latest write...I purposefully avoid looking at women to allow them freedom of space as I enjoy...alas...one mans avoidance will be not enough...many will stare...

I thoroughly enjoyed your lovely poem and I greatly appreciate your comments James. I think having daughters heightens our sense of awareness.

Way to go Anne-Marie, I applaud you, and more people should stand up and help. That hardly ever happens, I can speak from experience. And yes, this happens everywhere, even where you don't expect it. This is a GREAT reply.

Thank you for your supportive words Darren. When we see it happen, we need to address it and come to the help of those under duress whenever possible.

very relatable poem Anne, many young blood would be able to relate to it, you have written something grave and universal.

Great advice Anne-Marie, because our daughters seldom hear this sort of maternal experience.I asked my daughter's fiance to come to church with us, or he cannot date my child. My daughter knew her "macho, ex-marine guy" would not come to worship Jesus. She was angry at first. Then she discovered he had an assault rap, etc. She loves Jesus even more now. Once we give in to a piece of flesh, no mystery remains. Almost nothing sacred, either. But Jesus washes anyone pure, as He did me. amen (7)

Thank you so much for your comments Anil. I am relieved you discovered what lied into that young man's past and thank goodness your daughter is now more aware and clear from that character. It can be a pretty tough world to navigate at times for our girls who not only need a good moral compass but also a decent dose of common sense.

The descriptive wording and the great imagery brought your poem to life. The growing pains of maturity are sometimes hard to accept yet life moves on yet, no always means no. Emile.

Thank you for your comments Emile. It was an unpleasant experience for both the young man who got turned down and my kid who had to get out of her comfort zone and become vocal.

So well stated Anne-Marie. Unfortunately it even happens in the sanctum of the soup...it should brought to the attention of all so proper measures can be taken and others wont be harassed. On the way to therapy the other day, I was on the el and had to stand up to a bully harassing the female passengers.

Thank you so much for standing up to this bully Tim. My younger daughter was being constantly sought after by a persistent young man on campus, and she had to put her foot down and confront him.

That's telling him off Anne-Marie - serves him right - as we say in Australia - 'Good on her' - thanks for sharing ...Maria

I love how you did this, you have expressed your thoughts and your message so well and that ending...if he doesn't get the hint, then he has been at sea way too long. What about, "This port is closed" did he not understand? Really Anne Marie, this was beautiful and creative and inspiring.

Thank you for your delightful comments Chris. The young man in question finally understood the 'port was closed' as you so colorfully put it when he was at last told in no uncertain terms; it took my kid some guts, but she is the better for it now, and she no longer recoils when she sees his banner floating about.

Dear Anne-Marie. This entry is priceless and valuable beyond measure. It is such a motivational tool to live by and to hold for self esteem and worth. All girls young old and in between need to know your words. Thus to your entry and words themselves I say "So let it be said so let it be written so let it be done" I so love the power and strength. Well done completely and entirely. Have a wonderful day.

Thank you so much for your wonderful response Lisa. The poem was inspired by my youngest child who was the target of a young man's relentless and unwanted attention. But, please, read Claire Day's unparalleled poem 'the Spiral Staircase', I think you might like that one even more:)
