Mourning Doves

The sounds of the night have been turned off like a dripping faucet. A deep and generous silence pervades. Mourning doves chant plaintive songs that drift across placid morning air – a gentle nudging for dawn to awaken.

We now have a varietyof returning birds to listen to in the early morning. Mourning doves are one of them, and I enjoy their soft coos. Didyou know they are related to pigeons, so like pigeons mourning doves are edible. When offered in high class restaurants they are called "squads." Thoight you'd like to know. ' Maurice

The first time I heard dove cooing loudly at night I thought it was an owl. Very loud. Loved the poem, Maurice.

My favorite time of each brand-new day, Maurice. An open window to hear songbirds sing as if they sing only for me. Wistfully written.
