The 'lay' form is octosyllabic medieval poetry, from six to sixteen lines

His days were hard, his nights were long The Psalmist woke, six hours 'fore dawn Awakened by a breeze so slight His chamber still bereft of light Some scoff he rose the lyre to play The record shows he stood and prayed ********** Notes: The Psalmist is King David The record is the Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Brochos (Blessings), pages 3a & 3b The lyre functioned as David's alarm clock, its strings stirred by the breeze that arises in Israel at midnight David formulated a long prayer service, known as Tikkun Chatzos, loosely translated as 'Midnight Prayers,' which pious Jews still perform today

This has a lovely cadence to it. A singing poem almost. Nicely heard.

I adore reading the Old Testament as it is really all historically true and all are wonderful stories - Enjoyed your verse and your notes - interesting to note that pious jews still do the same today! Love this Gershon. Hugs, Jennifer.

You know, I should have written 'ultra-pious' Jews (still get up at midnight and pray all night 'till just before dawn, when they go to the ritual bath, usually). Most of them live in Jerusalem. I only know of one fellow in Chicago who does this, for example. Glad you enjoyed this one. Best wishes, Gershon

I love the idea where a lyre can be an alarm clock. Very clever. Stay frosty my friend.
