Mayberry Life With Deputy Fife

The life of this Fife was inane
No burglars did Barney detain
     Got locked in the cell
     As crooks bade farewell
Seems God gave him just half a brain

In comedy each plays a part
Aunt Bea cooked and huge was her heart
     Old Otis loved booze
     And Andy could schmooze
But Barney made others look smart

Ohhh, fun limerick, Carolyn, especially that very creative last line! I guess that's why everyone loved him. :-)

Wow! You sure nailed Barney's essence here, or the essence of Barney, as the case may be...And yet, I always felt that he was the straw that stirred the show's drink, the sine qua non, without whom 'Andy Griffith' wouldn't have lasted more than 13 or 26 weeks back in the day. :) gw

Carolyn, this is PERFECT--in every way. You NAILED Barney--who MADE show more than anyone else! Janice

I love this Carolyn! You have captured their personalities in a nut shell. I still enjoy watching that old classic from time to time! xxoo : )

Oh, that show from days past where simple and good entwined. Got silly for a sec, didn't I? I know 'gold ole' days' are fictitious, just like good ole' dumb Barney and dirt-dumb Gubber. Still that show has a nostalgia-factor and I enjoyed your limericks. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

I'd forgotten all about Guber. And didn't Gomer Pyle start on this show too? Come to think of it, maybe Barnie didn't make all the others look smart... Thanks for reading!

I remember the show..in a way, this is a tribute to the deputy. It's not easy to play stupid all the time. Well done, Carolyn.

Lol! Carolyn, I wanted to write one on Barney Fife but my muse couldn't come up with anything. What you came up with was good. I loved the fictional town of MayBerry. Could you imagine MayBerry without the comedic brilliance of Don Knotts? The show produced a life long friendship with Don Knotts and Any Griffith. It looks like a winner to me. I wish you the best of luck in the contest:-)Alexis

Barney was the funniest character on the show, Alexis, mostly because he wasn't too swift. Thanks for reading

Nice one Carolyn, we didn't have the show over here so not too familiar with the characters. Good luck. Tom.

The old reruns are still on here, but it was not one of my favorite shows. The humor is sort of slapstick.
