Notes About The Poem

May I Dance With You

Winnie the witch was seeking romance So headed off to the Halloween dance She went with her old school friend Mary Who is cute and pretty but incredibly hairy! Pumpkin lanterns light up the darkened room Casting eerie shadows in the gloom Winnie had her eye on a wizard called Arty - She’d met him at a ghost and ghouls party Arty asked Winnie to take to the floor Scary costumes caused such a furore Zombies and ghosts were sneaking a kiss Arty kissed Winnie … his lips didn’t miss!!! The music changed and they started to bop Arty kicked Winnie’s leg - she began to hop She burst into tears in the middle of the room Arty helped her to the seat with the aid of her broom Winnie’s ankle was broken – it was clear to see They had to fly on his broomstick to casualty! Contest May I dance with you Sponsored by Galeo DS Many thanks to Mama Bear who sent me the image which inspired my poem 10~08~16

Winnie and Arty have been an instant hit, Jan, not just with me, but with many others too! I would love to dance, as long as we keep it slow...I gave up on rock 'n roll and twist long time ago:) Hugs // paul

I looked up 'Hop tu naa' and it predates Halloween, and was the new years eve? They are unsure of its origins but many think it may come from Manx Gaelic, 'Shogh ta'n Oie' meaning 'this is the night' interesting Jan... Here in the southern hem it is Beltaine this time of year.

thanks for the comment Rick I am very touched that you take time to look this info up:-)At Hop tu naa the children often sing a song about 'Winnie the witch' which is why I chose to name mine Winnie in the poem :-) hugs Jan xx

Without the picture prompt I probably would never have thought of the poem - I don't enjoy Halloween especially now it is very commercialised as 'trick or treat- we never celebrated as kids when I lived in the uk and .' Halloween is known as 'hop tu naa' on our Island:-) hugs Jan xx

no, no, no...this dance is horrific, so no dancing with me lol. it's fun to read this Jan. though am looking forward to a good dance, maybe some long gowns, some pink noses and a fall here and there, better than a 'wizard breaking aa witch's leg' dance lol. best wishes in the contest Jan

We never ever celebrated it when I was a kid - now they have trick or treat which is lovely for the little kids but sometimes there is a small minority of older teenagers can take it too far and intimidate people especially the elderly:-( I am keeping well:-) love to you and Peter:-) hugs Jan xx

Since I joined soup i have tried to write with humour Nette - it hides bad times in my life. My first poem Splendid Isolation was a sad poem so I deliberately posted Just Desserts which is a fun poem - if I can raise a smile with my poems that is the best thing for me:-) hugs Jan xx

I was thinking someone was getting ready for Halloween early this year, but then saw it is a contest poem. Either way it was a hoot to read and I'd have this bad boy primed and ready for All Hallow's Eve just the same. Nice job! MC

I don't like Halloween Marquis and never celebrate it lol ! I got sent this picture on 7th October and it was the perfect prompt for the contest:-) I do have a few poems 'in stock' but nothing for any of the contests - many of my poems are simply written for fun - I recently did a series of parodies of nursery rhymes after I read a poem by Ilene Bauer - I never know what will inspire the next write lol:-) hugs Jan xx

I don't write for every contest - have a few poems 'in stock' but none for any of the current contests:-) hugs jan xx
