Lives of Pretense

So now we return to our lives of pretense She to her husband and me to banality Even though we just shared a love so immense It is time to return to our fake reality. On the sheets behind me remains her fragrance The memories of her caresses so sweet But now we return to our lives of pretense As she slowly disappears down the street. I stand on this balcony the future unseen As now we return to our lives of pretense My love for her it is true and it’s keen But of her touches I must feign innocence. She has another life that I am not a part of To try to make a change makes no sense She cannot leave it now not even for our love So now we return to our lives of pretense. NOTE: I wrote this poem for a contest thinking a Quatern was required when in fact a Quatrain of only 3 stanzas was the format. So, alas, this has no home other than I like it myself. I penned another, quite different poem for the contest.

The heart wants what the heart wants. It is sad and usually turns out to break up a marriage. I can relate as my first husband did this to me. He actually did me a favor because after our divorce I met and married a man who I have been happily married to 35 years. My ex's union with the woman he cheated on me with only lasted six years. He has since had two other wives and is now alone. A poignant portrait Joe. 7 ; )

Oops, thanks Joyce. I looked up the definition for "quartern" by mistake - notice the repeated phrase. That made it even more challenging. I like this poem, too. So I will remove it from the contest and try again. Thanks.

Joe this is a great poem and should be a winner, but did you notice that there is a maximum of three stanzas? I had four and removed one of mine when I noticed that. Joyce
