"Autumn is the hardest season. The leaves are all falling, and they’re falling like they’re falling in love with the ground." – Andrea Gibson
The lonely dirt road is not alone
It’s surrounded by symbols and colors of Fall
There are soft golden maple and burgundy too
All the shades of Autumn draped toward the road
On each side of the road is a wooden fence
It lifts from the ground amid layers of leaves
They brighten up the day the way sunshine gives
A hint of something welcoming and filled with happiness
The squirrels are all working, gathering their nuts,
Taking them to homes built by their energetic fingers
They tend to scurry back and forth, amid leaves falling
Letting everyone know that summer has departed
If you look to the azure sky, there are white clouds floating by,
Reminding the onlooker that today is soft and bright,
Filled with gentle reminders of Autumn’s tender touch
Arranging it’s warm welcome through the emerald of pine
Checking the bird feeder leaves a yearning deep inside
Because they’ll be leaving soon, going toward the south
Not bothering with the tall, yellow sunflowers in the garden
Remembering that now they must go on where they’re safe
Walking along the dirt road, I discover a crumpling at my feet
The pondering of leaves revealing their death chant to me
I wish they could stay this way, all bright and welcoming to me
But know they’ll turn to a crisp color of darkest brown and ebony
The dirt road is gravel and reminds me why I enjoy the time
I spend on it, surrounded by the crowd of leaves floating down
Praising the heavens for His wisdom in bringing them to this
A season for memories of all that has been and all that is
The seasons all have their special gifts to bring us humans
We can easily forget to appreciate their awakening and yearning
For a hint of affection that gives them the adoration they long for
A feeling of true enlightenment felt when there is time for them
“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go” - Unknown
