Just Another Valley
In heavy shadow,
the weighted river
digging deeper,
barefoot and wading
a protagonist flow
draws me in--
above me
sunlit peaks;
and against
a darkening blue sky
an eagle
makes triumphant patterns--
I have seen
this valley before;
walked the pebbled path
along the bank,
current-spray
washing red stain
from canyon walls:
Some call it
simply clay-
an understatement
for its art to captivate
and utilitarian forms
the potter would say
perhaps God thought
too much of it
and man in charge
of his own destiny
seems wedded
to a thermal
mold....
