If I Had a Dime

“Hey man” “can you spare me a dime”? If you have more, that would be fine, I will go to the diner to get some coffee I like mine with English toffee. My pockets are empty, no coins within I haven’t had a meal since lord knows when, I need a shave and a haircut too Hand me down clothes that aren’t so new. I’m here every day, I see you go by It hurts me just to say hi, I don’t have much, just a book in my sack And this old wool coat around my back. So if you could spare me a dime I’d go in for coffee and get warm for a time, I would not want you to give up your hat Nor hear you say “been there, done that”. I do not expect to be degraded and fall I had a misfortune and lost it all, The game of life dealt me a joker Would rather have a royal flush as in poker, I won’t ask you again and I will not beg Wish I could get off this wooden nail keg We could go to the park and sit awhile Having someone to talk to would bring me to smile. I could tell you where I’ve been and what I have done But it’s the same old story, and that’s no fun, If you choose to walk with me and chat There’s not much better than that. You don’t have to stay here; you may keep your dime But stop again tomorrow or another time, I’m sure I’ll be here, sitting next to the wall When I see you I will give you a call. The dime that I had, I left at the alter I asked the Lord not to let me falter, You see I am penniless now but not distressed I found enlightenment for I have been blessed. The book in my sack I had long ago I won’t sell it or let it go, ‘Finding God’ is the title of that book It’s my connection to faith that I did overlook. If I had a dime now I would make a call I would tell him thank you for all. With him at my side I will have more time to live, even without a dime
