“War is the echo of men’s egos.” Graziano Gungui
Note: As we approach the Easter season, Jesus' crucifixion reminds me of the need to crucify my own ego. I also believe our individual and collective egos could be crucified because, in my heart of hearts, I believe ego is the root cause of suffering including war.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ metal helmets, rimmed view in the brick jungle rockets rape buildings to the ground, skeletons remain standing with beds and baths exposed, flames licking the edges of humanity WAR. WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? wander down the road and see the bodies strewn and mangled, hear sobbing mothers and sisters and scattered gunfire, see how fragments of steel shred flesh and pour blood into streets WAR. WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? see the profits made selling death see the greatness of our bullets and bombs see the collective egos of mankind see them pursuing power, money, and greed WORLD WITHOUT WAR. WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? see a world with diminished egos see the need for controlling people and land vanquished see compassion on the rise see us pursuing peace, not pride
Dear Sara, this is such a well written, profound and poignant piece. How true is the quote and your poem that defines ego, a formidable enemy if not conquered and all its destructive devastation caused through the untaming of it. ‘Flames licking the edges of humanity’, see the collective egos of mankind’ really stood out for me. Your last stanza is beautiful and full of hope, wisdom, compassion. The final line concludes a very reflective piece of wonderful, empathetic writing.
I'm always amazed that one idiot with an ego can literally get thousands to die on their behalf. Not a lot has changed over the years.
Dear Sara, Your poem, reminded me of the Temptations song. As Easter draws near, your words serve as a stark reminder of the need to crucify our own egos, echoing the sacrifice and compassion exemplified by Jesus. Thank you for your courage in shedding light on the harsh realities of conflict and the collective ego that fuels it. Your vision of a world where compassion triumphs over pride inspires hope and introspection. May your words continue to stir hearts and minds, igniting the flames of empathy and peace in a world often clouded by darkness. - Blessings, my dear friend, Daniel
We are made so aware of war and its devastation through TV. Sara B, it is horrible to see the effects upon the innocent people who live there. Paying a price for something that they did not do. I guess there is a contest, so this one reads like a good contender to me. Way to go. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara K
thanks, Sara K, for your visit today. I agree, war is horrible. The people who 'play' war profit from it ....to vanquish we need to squelch egos. have an enjoyable evening, Sara
