I Excised the Word Xmas

"I want a season that whispers, "Jesus." Ann Voskamp 'Twas the night before Xmas... No, No. WAIT! That big X woefully negates Christ's birth ~ A phrase I detest and makes me irate because it diminishes Jesus' worth. At Christmas, presents are always gifted What greater gift could there be, but His life? Pity, the name of the season shifted where only joyful merriment is rife. "X" out Santa Claus from the occasion and there'd be a tumult of objections. There's no balance in such an equation. These are my sentiments and reflections. I celebrate His sacrifice each day, sans a tinseled tree or lights on display, so I have excised "Xmas" as a word for its use is Biblically absurd. Yes Lin, Xmas is one sense an irritating commercial abbreviation. Yet in another it can bracket God's incarnation.

It seems most people are quick to celebrate His birth, but much less attention is paid for the reason He was born. I celebrate His death because it offers us eternal salvation. Thanks, Lisle.

Great write, and a well deserved win in the contest. The point you make couldn't be more clear; the commercialization of the sacred holiday is pervasive and our world has values that are askew. Blessings, Paulette

I would agree with you whole-heartedly. It's like celebrating someone's birthday and giving all your attention to another personage, who's not even real. Congrats on your placement; hallelujah on your piece.

Hello Lin ... the commercial world has already desecrated Christmas enough. The true meaning of Christmas needs reviving. You've done a great job here Lin - Lindsay

Congratulations on your win Lin! This particular word now holds several meanings. I don’t like it either. You have penned a wonderful piece here. I still can’t believe you’re back. I’m so glad you returned!!

Thanks an awful lot, Mark. What a nice welcome I've had from so many that knew me, as well as from new poets I've yet to read. I appreciate your friendship and comments, as always, Mark.

It's a shortcut that should be cut from everyone's vocabulary! Thanks for agreeing, Ja.

X=? Ex-Mass? Does XXX represent lots of kisses, poison, or whiskey? I am confused . . . .

X marks the spot, but it doesn't always unearth a treasure.

Well said Lin, I've never liked that term Xmas, must be a pagan thing. We've had adverts on TV for weeks now, the shops full of cheap tat. Shame the birth of jesus is ignored by many. Tom

That term has always been a source of contention with me, Tom. It's sacrilegious. Thanks for your input on the subject. I always appreciate your thoughts. Have a great weekend!
