Honest Comments

I read the comments others make, On poem I cannot understand It makes no sense at all to me. They call it fine and great and grand. I read the comments on more poems And find consistent patterns there. One writer sends the self same words On every poem chosen to share. And then I read my own comments And feel a little bit of shame. They're meek and mild, innocuous. I realize I've played the game. What is the use of comments, if We can't express an honest thought? Why are some poets protective of Each simple word their pen has wrought? If you like a poem I have penned, Kind comments would surely ease me. If you detest it, don't comment and Say it's wonderful to please me. There is no measurement to use To judge if what we write is fine. Honest appraisal is the way To tell me what you think of mine.

JOyce I think you have expressed MY thoughts too, and you did a VERY fine job of it. One of the best in the contest. Congrats. Yes, the poems I don't understand, I often just say something ambiguous! and I am flabbergasted to see so many others acting like they "get it."

Dear Joyce, Sometimes I don't leave comments if I don't understand the poems. Still, I hate to discourage writers so I look for the best aspects in poems. Jack will love your entry! Sending love to you and prayers for Brian.

i totally agree with you on this, joyce. i have limited time and won't waste it by commenting on a poem i don't like (which would also possibly hurt the poet's feelings, something i do not like to do). i did enjoy this one, though and now you know it, too!

Well Joyce, you've certainly put your foot in it now.....Seriously, I know what you're talking about. I have benefited much from the honest appraisals of my poetry. I do not always agree with them but I always take them into consideration and evaluate the efficacy of their merit.

Well this was for a contest. I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings. Joyce

Oh Joyce, you are my new best friend, lol. Well that is a little extreme, but it is an example. I have been writing and reading long enough to know what you are saying, and I have mixed emotions about fragile egos. We all like to think we are good, when in fact, some poems are good, and some aren't and many appeal to some and not to others. I don't have an answer, but I do have agreement. (Read 'A Purple Cow' if you wish to see my take). Thanks for posting this. Jim

Thank you J.R.. I have trouble posting. They come out double spaced or triple spaced and I don't put them in that way. I am going to read your Purple Cow.
