Honest Comments
I read the comments others make,
On poem I cannot understand
It makes no sense at all to me.
They call it fine and great and grand.
I read the comments on more poems
And find consistent patterns there.
One writer sends the self same words
On every poem chosen to share.
And then I read my own comments
And feel a little bit of shame.
They're meek and mild, innocuous.
I realize I've played the game.
What is the use of comments, if
We can't express an honest thought?
Why are some poets protective of
Each simple word their pen has wrought?
If you like a poem I have penned,
Kind comments would surely ease me.
If you detest it, don't comment and
Say it's wonderful to please me.
There is no measurement to use
To judge if what we write is fine.
Honest appraisal is the way
To tell me what you think of mine.
