Our meadow has always held surprises. After we moved in - that first spring - a myriad of daffodils appeared from dormant bulbs, exactly where I had decided my fairy garden would be. Like a beautiful stage play the seasons transitioned. After summer showers, gigantic fungi grew overnight in perfect symmetry, like shells, layered on the old oak stump. - now, into blazing colors of Autumn against an unreal blue sky, leaves floated like lost butterflies. Finally, bare trees revealed large stick nests that all along, I assumed to be ravens’. Cozy shelters against the winter freeze. High in winter trees, Stick nests become visible who would guess-squirrels. Leaf Nests – These constructions are found at least 20 feet up in a tree. Leaf nests are usually tucked in the fork of a large tree branch, which adds stability. You can tell them apart from bird nests because they are noticeably larger than a typical bird nest.

Such a spectacular haibun my dear poet friend Suz. I enjoyed the panoramic view of high in winter trees which you've skillfully portrayed showing the astounding creation of God. I love it a lot. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you always and your writings. Hugs

I have a feeling this Haibun is based on real life experiences, Suz! So those nests turned out to be squirrels' dreys! I would not have known had you not spilt the beans :) ~ Enjoy the rest of the weekend, my friend // paul

Hi Paul: Yes….this is a re-write of one I did a couple of years. I had removed it from the Soup but I revised it and reposted. It was a surprise to me to find that squirrels build a nest. Always something new to learn. Have a good week. SuZ

One of the blessings of the trees losing their leaves is we get to see the bird's nests -marvels of architectural design! Thank you for this wonderful viewpoint! Blessings!

We have a drey a few trees down from our garden. They're usually found in the fork of a thick branch from the tree trunk. They weave the twigs somehow. nature amazes..as does your haibun Suz. :) Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary: I sure appreciate knowing what they are called. I now have an image in my mind of a grey squirrel in his drey. Yes, nature is fascinating. Cheers<~> SuZ

That's a really big nest. Looks a titch bedraggled but I'm sure it's well-built. A very nice job of Haibunning, Suz.
