Hello Mum

It’s not what she hears that day
No. It’s what she sees,
The image very nearly killed her
The neighbours say the scream was heard two blocks away
Though she can’t recall hearing what was said

No. It’s what she sees alright
Even to this day, she can feel the envelope
She can see the “WESTERN UNION” through the milky window
She can see the “THE SECRETARY OF WAR DESIRES ME TO EXPRESS…”
What she doesn’t hear, is what the Telegram Boy had to say

She still has the Telegram
Its yellow parchment a little brittle, the typed words
“HIS DEEP REGRET THAT YOUR SON…” a little smudged, tears she guesses
Though she doesn’t remember any tears, they came later
Along with the pain of not knowing, and the sorrow of knowing

Then almost a year to that day, it’s not what she hears
But what every mother would want to see
What every mother would want to feel
And every mother would dearly love to hear
“Hello mum, I’m home…”

Hi Mark...a sad write, a consequence of war or the cost of peace...at the end of that chain, a parent with a grave loss...cheers, 7habang

Well written with poetic flow aided by superb imagery. It tantalizes us with prefect sadness to seduce us with the nectar of poetic creativity. Emile. #7

wow, this is a very touching story and ends up with a good ending. Sometimes people are wrongly informed about things. That is such a happy twist of fate. Nicely done!!

I came here first to thank you for your kind comment on my "Rumi" poem, but became too engrossed in this remarkable poem and your emotional twist in "what a mother's ears" cannot hear, in times of such deep pain or grief. Oh wow....I'm glad I caught this one. I too, couldn't help but mention what a mother "sees", in my own entry, .., ..knowing mothers need all their senses, but also knowing that she might have cause to not want to see.....not want to hear, ...in such troubling times. Well done!
