I sat beside her watching her sleep, holding her hands in mine. Despite their age, her hands were beautiful, deft and wise: warm, strong, and steady hands for stirring vats of jam, for pouring milk into a cereal bowl, hands for putting on Band-Aids and braiding my hair. These were Mother’s hands. I sat beside her watching her sleep, holding her hands in mine. Despite their age, her hands were graceful, soft, slender, elegant, and scrupulously groomed: delicate hands for hand modeling, for designing and transforming fabric into fashionable clothes, hands for putting on airs and styling my hair. These were Grammy’s hands.

Your poem evoked a profound sense of admiration; its uplifting tone resonated deeply, dear Sara. It encapsulates the beauty of life, particularly as I witnessed the gradual aging and increasing fragility of my parents until their demise. It truly pains me to witness their declining condition. Your emotional lines demonstrate a clear manifestation of your pride and affection for your parents.

your comments were quite touching and genuine, dear Sotto. I appreciate your kind words about my poem and am grateful you shared your experience with your own parents. I lost my parents about 20 years ago. Tough for children to watch their parents age and decline. In a way I'm glad I witnessed their decline--made me appreciate them and life much more deeply. Thanks for stopping by...have a splendid evening. your poetess friend in Texas, Sara

An incredibly refined poetry written with top talent. Age is an album of memories, each wrinkle tells a story.

This amazingly beautiful poem resonates with me so much Sara….It made me feel so emotional as my mums hands were so very beautiful and comforting….little, soft, crooked fingers from Arthritis and weathered by time…..they are one of the things l truly miss….the comfort and joy they gave me is irreplaceable! Thankyou for writing this poem Sara….Debx

Deb--thanks for sharing your experience with me...I'm deeply grateful that my poem touched you deeply. I miss my mom's hands, too. Her's too were arthritic but strong and comforting. Now I'm teary-eyed. Thanks for stopping by and for commenting, hugs, Sara

I understand, Silent One. It's heartbreaking to watch our parents decline--really tugged on my heart as both my parents decline pretty quickly. I hold onto the memories of their days of strength and courage and relish life even more now as a result. Thanks for stopping by and sharing. PS You're so thoughtful to take your mom shopping...seriously, many wouldn't do so.

thank you, Daniel, for sharing. No better compliment can be given to a poet than what you did in telling me my poem ignited memories of your own grandmother. Thanks for telling me that. Have a blessed evening, Sara

Dear Sara, I am so touched by your poetry when you write about your Mother and now your Grammy. You have a line of beautiful ancestors who have passed their strength on to you. Your pride and love for them is so evident in your emotional lines. Did either of them write?

They were all artists of a different genre. You’ve acquired one of your own as talented as I’m sure they both were. Hugs and a sunny day to you.

thanks for your kind comments. I agree, I have a wonderful line of strong ancestors. Thank you for those words. Neither of them wrote. My mother, however, drew pen and ink drawings; my grandmother designed clothes, created patterns, and then fashioned her own clothes and also the costumes for my aunt's ballet company's performances. I admired their free spirits, resolve, and creativity. I ramble..Have a pleasant day, dearest Lin. hugs, Sara
