Friends Like Lovely Flowers

In the years since I came to PoetrySoup, I developed sweet friendships with two poets: Daver Austin and Matthew Amish. Their poems I visited so frequently that we even exchanged chapbooks with each other. Both of these two poets were men who had one sad thing in common. At one point (at different times from each other), they had stopped posting poems for a while, and busy as I always am, I failed to notice when I had not heard from them until it finally dawned on me that it had been weeks since I’d touched base with them. When I investigated on the two different occasions this happened, I discovered they each had passed away a month or two before I had noticed they were gone. How I wish they had let me know that their health had been failing. I knew of Daver’s chronic health problems, yet I guessed he was still doing ok. Matt’s death was a complete shock to me. I regret not having told them how much their friendship meant to me before they died. From this experience I’ve learned to be more vigilant on keeping up with my special friends who are like the loveliest of flowers in my friendship garden. How easily they can slip away. like lovely flowers good friends beautify our lives . . . keep them well watered Dedicated to all my poet friends who have passed away Nov. 22, 2021 for charles messina's Haibun- With A Message Poetry Contest

Beautiful loving sentiment, Andrea. I guess it’s difficult to keep track of the crossing over of fellow poets on a public website. Congrats on your win, with this heartfelt emote

My dear friend, life does that to us. Busy times come and we hardly have time to write. Has caught me several times in these past years and is always a regret when finally I see that writing and commenting void. Even worse as in your case you lost two dear friends due to thier deaths. God bless..

Indeed, we get busy and do not check. And the older we get, the faster they fall. We put off callung, writing reading. I think its wuite human. Plus you have a family, a job and you write. Know that some you may not catch before they are gone. Its OK, Andrea. Do not try to be all things to everyone here. Then, you spread yourself too thin. Just advice from one whose friends are gone. And people die at any age, not just the old. We were not born to live forever, nor our friends. Pangie

It's heartbreaking to learn of a friend's death, but even more heartbreaking to find out after a lot of time has passed and nobody knew. With all your years at Soup, you have had more than your share of both experiences, and your haibun is so touching in its tribute to two special poets and the dedication at the end. The counsel in your haiku is poignant as well. You are such a good friend to track people's involvement and then notify the community when someone has passed. Thank you for that.

I did not know that either of them had passed. I appreciate you doing this work that informs us. I know that it had been a long time since I had heard from either of them. I know since COVID things have changed so much. Reads like a good contender for the contest to me. Thanks for the visit to my page. Soup has changed so much and I wonder if some others have passed as well. Sara

So well navigated around the theme for contest. There is a special kind of connection between poets that is forged on the soup, and their passing will surely hurt...Delice

How truly beautiful Andrea and sad. I imagine you felt somewhat empty inside when you found out they both had gone. Our relationships and love for others in this world is what really matters. I’m sure they both had the same connection with you Andrea…so they knew what they meant to you! Debx
