Notes About The Poem

For the 2026-06-14 Forevermore Poetry Contest of Constance La France/ June 20, 2026

Vera Brittain Quote: “I thought that spring must last ...

Forevermore

“I thought that spring must last forevermore, for I
was young and loved, and it was May.” Vera Brittain

Oh, springtime of my life, if only I
had taken time to revel more in it -
absorb its colors like a butterfly;
consume it like a big banana split.
For nothing can compare to one’s spring days -
with everything so fresh; romance so sweet.
Such memories that in mind still blaze!
If only I had known life was so fleet.
If I could go back to those days of May,
reliving them without the least unease
no matter if the skies were clear or gray,
I’d ride each hour – a bird upon a breeze!
Good health, the thrills, and all that I adore
from youth I yearn to keep forevermore.

Congratulations dear poetess on your top win in this contest with a lovely sonnet on the springtime of your life, with a flowing rhythm with expression of nostalgy, mixed with some layers of regrets for some incomplete wishes as afterthoughts.. .. Wishing you a marvellous day.

If we could take the wisdom we've gained from life's experiences and apply it to our younger selves, we'd be far more thoughtful and appreciative of the present moment. Congrats on your top win, Andrea

In this season of spring's passing to summer 2026, I'm with you - life is short in retrospect. Congrats on your placement here; haven't had a banana split in years; guess I should investigate the new ice cream shop up the road.

A pretty poem, and relatable experience - and as a bonus, you get to fly like a bird on the breeze! Also, I'm right there with you with the banana split! Great quote, too!

Well said. "We grow old too soon...and wise...." as the saying goes. What the heck. Maybe a second time around. Nothing on the subject we know firsthand...reincarnation possible as anything else.

Well, if we could go back to youth with the lessons learned in life, we would be better users of the time with so much appreciate for life and learning, etc. Alas, it won't happen. It takes a lifetime to learn so much then we can't pass it on unless we put it in books, sharing by talking or poems to help the younger ones learn easier lessons about life. Sara K.

I too share the same sentiments, dear Andrea. How l wish to sail back to my childhood days. They were days of fun and frolic with my siblings and cousins and being fed on the love of my parents. Beautiful poem. Thanks for taking me to the corridors of memory.

Yes. The cousins and other relation. I was the one who moved far away and there are some cousins today that I still haven't seen in over 50 years. That's crazy!
