It was the sweetest first romance A love that never stood a chance It was magical, that's the truth Lasting memories are the proof. I was young and so much in love No one knew, only God above Till one fateful Valentine's Day A card arrived, gave it away. Came home from school to a foray My card had been opened, dismay My dear mother was on my side Father's anger I can't describe. I despaired of what I should do So wrote a break up letter to The dear one who I loved so much Telling him to stay out of touch. The message I send plain and clear Is that children shouldn't live in fear If they're shown love, they live content And confide in loving parents.

It must have been a disappointing experience. Parents have a right to interfere, but they shouldn't be rash. They should persuade the children gently and slowly from being too close if they can't approve of the alliance. A teenager's pain I can very well discern here. Very well written dear Beryl.

Dear Valsa, thank you for your understanding of the difficult experience I had in my youth. I do think the situation should have been handled with care and kindness, but then so could a lot of other things that occurred in my childhood, I have to say mother always understood. Blessings, Beryl

I was only sixteen and so was my boyfriend 16 but his parents were returning to Scotland and he wanted us to get married and I go with them, so his mother came to our house to talk out this dilemma-all four parents were against it, I I had to finish school and they are children, agreed the parents, so broken hearted we said goodbye. But my parents were very understanding and really felt sorry for me, not possible though love they explained. We exchanged mail for a while, nothing of mine was ever opened. I completed my Matric and my Commercial Diploma, my parents were right. I do understand you though Beryl, because what happened to you happened to my best friend -sad but awesome write.. Hugs Jennifer.

Dear Jennifer, yes the opening of my card was disappointing but not surprising, my four sisters and I were brought up in an unbelievably strict household, although we had a darling angel of a mother. Though things changed in later life, one never forgets childhood strife. You had very understanding parents, they handled your situation with grace and understanding. Thank you for reading and the comments, much appreciated. Hugs in return, Beryl

Thank you Smita, though it was many moons ago, it still hurts that my moment was stolen. However I married my lovely husband and we’ve shared 55 happy years together… Beryl

oooo, so sad...a touching write! Even children are entitled to privacy. I was fortunate in that my parents understood that. Sorry you had to endure the upsetting moment. Have a splendid evening, Sara

Thank you Sara, privacy is essential to everyone, even children should be allowed their hopes, wishes and dreams. Enjoy your day and evening. Beryl

I so agree with you Anne-Lise, everyone is entitled to their privacy, children as well as adults. You never forget things that caused upsets such as what happened to me. Hugs in return, Belle

Sad someone snooping into your first Valentine's card. But I know you found true love later in life. Lovely poem.

Dear Victor, the card was one I’d have treasured for life, i remember exactly how it looked and the words inscribed, it had a little packet of forget-me-not seeds attached, was beautiful. Thank you, Beryl
