Imagism
A type of poetry that uses clear and direct statements in order to put an exact picture in the reader's head. A poem that is written using the imagism style should easily and quickly create visual images that tell the story.
She smiles, trying her best to suppress the pain,
not wanting to upset me.
But I see the strain collecting as tears in her eyes,
her hand in mine, fingers entwined,
we say nothing; words can't compete with touch.
She looks gaunt, emaciated, and worn out,
cancer cells are eating her from the inside out
in a relentless attack that is killing her.
And yet, she smiled; and I smiled back,
though my heart is breaking,
fighting back the tears that threaten to spill.
She squeezes my hand, and I never want to let go,
but I pray God will show mercy and soon set her soul free.
There are no words to describe that feeling;
it defies explanation.
It must be felt to be understood.
Her eyes close, and her breath fades
to a final gasp; as her soul departs this world.
And I cry, cursing cancer
for the abomination it is,
oblivious to all but its insidious crawl
it took her life before my eyes
and all I can do is cry.
