Notes: The Falklands was inhabited by France first and then two years later by the British, at different locations, and thus the facts still disputed to this day. Ironically France settled here, as an alternative incase New France  fell, and later gave up this territory to the Spanish, although some say under dubious circumstances.

Argentina claims what was Spain’s is now theirs. They tried to invade, at a time they were under military rule, and as many leaders do, they wanted to divert failures, (Argentina is a land of failures) they tried to invade and many soldiers had not even shoes. The illegal invasion was a war crime and still the Country has not been held to account.

What’s funny is the dictators using propaganda to brain wash the uneducated masses, act much like Trump does today. Argentina is a country run by Trumps for many decades.

The British, at the time defended the rights of the islanders, and upheld democracy and eventually won he war of the Falkland’s against the war criminals!

To this day the Falkland Islands have voted to remain free and a territory of the UK.

I know more than one Margret! Hahahahahahahahaha

SideNotes: I found this book in a second book store in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia! To make a long story short I was there for a family reunion of the Murrays, I am related to Anne Murray thus how I met the likes of Margret Atwood, Rita MacNeil and Leonard Cohen amongst many others, the sing-a-long was great in the east coast Celtic tradition!

An Island Of beauty and intrinsic history Penguins and rustic sheep A war by evil dictator that made us weep The British defended the locals with flair A war with the criminals, no shoes in despair Democracy won and Argentina to its knees They have learned is not wise to do as you please Many know not the history of Kings This land was to be Canada If not for French gifts that did bring With treachery they were tricked into Spanish rings Louis-Antoine de Bougainville Was first at Port St Louis The British were second two years to the day The Spanish claims left to the clowns in dismay Sadly Argentina with insanity did commit War crimes that killed innocent young brits Their leaders and poets in deceptions agreed They both cared less for humanity and more for their greed

Your interesting account of the Island's history allowed me to truly enjoy your poem. A great write Arthur, and I agree with Agona below that "if history was told in verse more of us would learn it":) Amitiés

I didn't know the history of the Falklands. Loved the tale and the style. Perhaps if history was told in verse more of us would learn it.

I remember that time well. My older brother had just joined the Marines. The US feared Argentina was looking for help from the Soviets( a start to WWIII) and tried to mediate a solution but their pleas fell on deaf ears. I'm glad the people got to choose how they wanted to be governed.

Pushy people, those Argentines. I remember being in Disney World one summer when it was invaded by several tour groups from there...such rude people, shouting and acting like they owned the place. An interesting history lesson for those who didn't know, or perhaps didn't remember.

Your poem brought back many memories as I had a couple of forces pen pals who served during the conflict. They were lucky they both came through it unscathed physically but the mental scars of anyone involved in conflict must run deep. There was one man called Simon Weston who has horrendous burns - he is inspirational! Love you poets notes how fascinating you met Margaret Atwood!:-) hugs Jan xx

I love this poem, it tells a story that I am familiar with without having to look everything up first. To this day it remains a silent fight between Argentina and the UK.
