Do Not Quench
Do not quench the young child’s spirit;
in so doing, part of him dies.
He may rebel or acquiesce;
he might resort to telling lies.
This is not to say, no restraint,
do not quench the young child’s spirit.
Guide him gently as God guides you;
sensing failure makes him fear it.
Scold him when scolding is needed,
and make sure he knows you love him.
Do not quench the young child’s spirit;
teach him right and he’ll learn to swim.
He’ll swim upstream against the flow
no reluctance to inherit,
discovering what he can do.
Do not quench the young child’s spirit.
