There were no tears of sorrow when she passed No suffering or pain, a quiet death Though many questioned just how long she'd last Few noticed when she took her final breath So many photographs and memories With family and friends while she was here She shared her time and warmth so willingly Forever will we hold her days so dear Though she has passed we will continue on There will be many gloomy days ahead Some days her memory will flash at dawn And some nights when we crawl into our bed For now let's raise our glass at summer's wake Cause soon it will be autumn's leaves we'll rake original poem by Daniel Turner

A lovely sonnet where personification takes pride of place, Daniel. I always feel a sort of sadness when summer departs, though I have nothing against autumn! Regards // paul

Hi Daniel, Summer never really dies She merely takes a rest And faithfully returns each year To gift us all her best. I like the Fall, but I'm a Summer girl at heart! Cool write Daniel!!

Thank you, Jeannie. I was looking at it as if each spring is the birth of a new cycle, therefore each season lives and dies but I get what you are saying. I am not a fan of winter's bite but I suppose each season has a gift to offer:) I am thrilled you stopped by for a visit:):)

We had 32 degrees today(celsius) so that's hot so summer hasn't died yet she's still on life support. Great write Daniel!

Lol Yes John, it's still hot here too. Just putting in my order early. My yard is dying and a few of the leaves are just starting to turn. Probably another 3 weeks I'd guess. Thanks for dropping by. Your support means a lot.

Yes, I realized that it was about the death of summer once I read the last two lines of the poem....the ending came as a surprise. Here in Toronto it still feels like summer....but I know it won't last long....and yes I had a great vacation.

Yes, but Autumn has its beauty as well. The rich warm Golds oranges Reds Browns cinnamon colors that are everywhere. I visited the Smokies once was the end of September and the beginning of October 1995. The trees on the hillsides were just beginning to turn color. For at least five years after that every fall I felt homesick for the mountains. I was only there a week but homesick is the only way I can describe it.

Yes Jolene. Autumn is gorgeous and a wonderful time for poets to stretch their imaginations. I was simply spoofing the death of summer. I agree, The Smokey Mountains are beautiful year round. I drove a truck for 20+ years and have enjoyed all of this country's beautiful landscapes. Thank you for reading and for your insightful comments.
