We all make choices in life, and sometimes, it's the small, seemingly insignificant little things that corrupt the heart and assault the soul. We often strengthen our convictions with logic, pride, and hubris; fortifying frustration, anger, and contempt. But we're all human and share the frailties intrinsic to our species no one is immune to failure. Some have stumbled and fallen through society's cracks, living in the shadows of life. No one likes poverty, and yet, here it is all around us. The city's reaction to the homeless is unapologetic and stern; fueled by scorn as opposed to love. And the public's deafening silence speaks volumes; sanctioning policies lacking in compassion and understanding. Our choices define us; some reveal humanity's heart, and some damn humanity's soul.

Dear Emile, your choice to pen this potent poem reveals the beauty of your heart’s empathy, and indeed, the lack of choosing to afford empathy does “damn humanity’s soul” - such a grand finale to a piercing and dramatic piece. Congratulations for your excellent win in Mark’s contest. Warmest wishes, my friend.. ~Susan

Emile, the message you convey was powerful when you wrote it, and now look what has happened in the year since. The choices all of us make have consequences, even when the choice is to remain silent. Congratulations on your win on mile 8 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 9 has already started!

This is an exceptional piece of writing, Emile. It deserves POTD or POTW because everyone should read it. Our nonchalance and our lack of empathy damns us, indeed. I'm afraid the general deafening silence when it comes to global warming and climate change will physically damn the next generation. Thanks for writing this, Emile.
