And How Was My Youth Spent
And how was my youth spent?
what a shadow of a childhood
lived with daydreams in the sunshine
Punch and Judy, Howdy Doody
drunken snows and cancelled Christmas
Fifties fever busy bellows
pumping, pumping life for lasting
lonely only lost in lilacs
understanding not the learning
nor anything concerning
hearing words spoke loud and ugly
school could bruise a perfect day
really this was life’s pure test
tenure of a time of failure
more of loss instead of gaining
fear, frustration, isolation
that was how my youth was spent.
