Listen to poem:
I Want, But Don't Need Yes, "I Want, But Don't Need" is my waistwatcher creed as I walk by each vending machine. All those chocolate chips calling out to my hips, colored Reese's in pieces - obscene! Will willpower surmount the cholesterol count of PayDays or some Rice Krispie Treats? Can I even forsake the caloric intake of LifeSavers, the smallest of sweets? Yummy Snickers and Kit-Kats, peanut M&Ms, with three flavors of Hostess fruit pie, I am hoping my brain simply vetoes the Cheetos, Doritos, and Fritos, oh my! Dare I ponder the truth of the harm Baby Ruth will inflict on my belly's increase? Soon my sweet tooth will bargain with riveting jargon, "Please buy it, I'll just eat a piece! Then there's Hershey's and Twix, and six kinds of trail mix. And the drinks! Pepsi, Root beer, and Coke, Dr. Pepper, YooHoo, Orange Crush, Mt. Dew render new resolutions a joke. Then two hours post-lunch, there's that nice Nestle Crunch overwhelming my stoic resolve, And the Heath bars and Dove bars and Clark bars and Mars bars enticing my will to dissolve. I am one of those hoarders of nickels and quarters - should ever the munchies catch fire. Self-control starts to fail when those Oreos hail, calling out to my carnal desire. In a fog, I hear clinking of coins, with lights blinking then eating and drinking. No sorrow! For I just HAD to buy it, the heck with my diet - "Whole 30" can just start tomorrow!

Thank you Connie! This write seems to have that affect on people... even as I type this, I am about to down a Reese's peanut butter cup, yum! Gotta be careful though, as my exercise has tailed off significantly this month...

Ha! This is great John, and so enjoyable to read ... I got a kick AND some joys out of it, (going into faves)! After my first marriage I worked with vending machines for a few months in Boston (with my father-in-law) and saw the business from a new - much more admirable - way than I had prior. Not easy work. Great stuff, My Friend! :o)

Great to see you here, my friend! I, too, worked with vending machines. My sophomore year in college. Honored to be a fav. Thanks for stopping by, I trust all is well.

Really enjoyed this, John. As I mentioned to Nina in reply to her comment on my entry, the poems on her final list were really good, and this one truly enjoyable. It has great rhythm and flow as well a sense of humor. Congrats.

Oh Lonna, I hope your grandson enjoys hearing it as much as I enjoyed writing it! You're right about the isolation and chaos. More humor and more snacks!

This definitely rattles along, and you have so many fun rhymes my head's whirling! For me, the ones I can't resist are peanut M&M's - this is an excellent entry for the contest!

Me too, I simply cannot say no to a handful of peanut M&Ms! A guy down the hall started putting them out on his desk for anyone to enjoy - I think I gained 5 pounds in a week! So I found a way to update my silly rattle poem to include them. Thanks for the visit Michelle!

If angry + hungry = hangry, then giggling + hungry should be gingry, or higgling... Or not. Thanks for the lip-smacking comment, Cecilia!

YUMMY!!! I am getting hungry!! Is it snack time yet? :) This is cute, clever and creative. Your thoughts bring a smile and make me giggle, at the same time. A fun write, my dear friend. :) Brandy

John, Bravo, I think you pulled it off and you did it so TASTEFULLY. heehee. I have a poem kind of like this one that names all the different candies I could possibly think of. Wish I could remember the title. It might be an ABC type poem. Anyway, I sure hope Nina loves this one. My corona poem I did for her upsets me because the changes just this past week make my poem's lines untrue!

what a fun rhyme scheme and poem this one way to read...as a diabetic I try to avoid those machines, but sometimes if my sugar is going low I will splurge on something, usually sweet, though at home if it drops, Cheetos are my quick snack of choice... best wishes in the contest, enjoyed this one :) hugs

john - i am blown away by your rhyme in this poem - absolutely brilliant!!! my favorite lines are the ones with "vetoes, Chee-tos, Doritos and Fritos" - i wish i'd written it! (have to add this - it felt like a cross between dr. seuss and edgar allan poe!)

Ilene, coming from such Rhyme Royalty, I am truly honored! And Poe and the good Doctor are 2 of my faves in the poetry world (Shel Silverstein makes it a trifecta). Love your comment!
