A Grand Dame

She twirls with fullest branches
admiring her ornamental dress,
patchwork of souvenirs, yesteryear’s
arts and crafts - preschool to cool age.
Silver tinsel fringe caught the light
of blinking bulbs - white then blue,
green and red. Bright eyes illuminate
in the festive room. Flames a-crackle!
Past trees would wear a star at their highest point,
but now a little silly but mostly serious -
an angel caps her pointy head, and handmade
glassy-eyed ornaments shake with merry glee.
Under her lovely dress, an infant, cooing
like a newborn dove, joyfully jerking
his little arms and legs. His very first Christmas
tree, the grandest dame, smiles his way.
