A Chipmunk's Song In Winter
Winter is not forever.
In fact, I’m not fully asleep
like hibernating bears are.
On a warm day you might see me creep.
up and out of my burrow,
often pushing snow piles away.
I like to run in the sun,
but never all day do I play.
You might catch me scurrying
with a mouth like an over-sized pouch.
Many are my predators,
but believe me – I am no slouch.
I’m nimble and fast on my feet,
dodging large birds, raccoons or your cat!
A whole winter’s worth of acorns
I store in two days. Imagine that!
However, I’m weary of these long naps.
I miss springtime’s berries and seeds,
fresh mushrooms and insects so yummy.
A five-ounce size chipmunk has needs!
I can’t wait to raid those bird feeders.
This spring better get here and fast.
But for the time being, no worries.
The food that I’ve hoarded can last!
