Nature Leading To Magic
At times, the path that we are taking dwindles to not even a thread of trail,
but we keep trudging forward as if by instinct.
Although the old path has been overtaken by myriad weeds
and a fathomless expanse of green, we walk with determination.
Branches of tall trees that block summer's sun have made it dark.
Also, the wood is permeated by a great silence
except for the sound of our noisily treading feet
and an occasional burst of song from birds.
At one point, one of us gets our hair caught in brambles.
It slows us down, but we manage to get our sister
released from the clutches of that nasty shrub.
Onward we proceed - excitement growing!
My heart is pounding as we emerge from the daunting vegetation.
Before us lies the beautiful secret place where sun streams like a waterfall
onto that large secluded pond we always recall from our childhood.
Sweaty and hot from our trek, we stand before it breathless.
It sparkles still pristine. Tossing off shoes, socks, shirts and shorts,
my sisters and I race each other – giggling school girls once more -
to see who will be first to feel again its cool, sweet water on our skin.
Fifty years fade away as we relive . . . the magic.
