Memories from childhood summers still tickling my stomach Through overgrown paths Red painted farmhouse where flowers and weeds grew in harmony It seems as yesterday, but it is long ago Outbuilding with a heart on the door Didn't exactly smell as roses A carefree shed, with photographs of the royal family on the wall You don't wipe yourself behind with the head of the country With padlocks and cracked beams that filtered the daylight (and odor) Silent testimony the time when life was different Shoulder to shoulder in the struggle for existence with teamwork and brotherhood to achieve a common goal The feeling of community in all simplicity Childhood memories not only smell of venerable dust, outbuildings or weeds but brings along an atmosphere of ancient wisdom

This is a warm, textured tribute to childhood, rich with sensory detail and emotional honesty. It’s both personal and universal—inviting the reader to recall their own mix of beauty, decay, innocence, and wisdom. The final lines—childhood memories bringing “an atmosphere of ancient wisdom”—are especially resonant. It emphasizes that childhood isn’t just a time, but a source of enduring insight.

We all enjoy reminiscing childhood memories. Indeed those days were quite different from the present times. Yet how we love going back to those nostalgic remembrances. Enjoyed reading your poem and love the title. Love and Hugs

~~~we had indoor plumbing but some of my rural cousins didn't. I remember the loss of a shoe when someone playfully threw it through the stencil cutout.
oh wow, Anne-Lise! So much to take in as I read your poem...brought so many things to mind about my own childhood. Liked the imagery here: With padlocks and cracked beams that filtered the daylight and the wisdom in the last verse. Magnificent! hugs, Sara
Quite a dump! A lot to assimilate, but very well written...and honest, above all! We cannot wipe away the past all together, so a good swim in the lake a must, for those lucky enough to have grown up on a farm, closest to nature and truth. And then go fishing.
LOL Anne-Lise. Hearts and roses are not exactly two things that come to mind when it's time to use an outhouse. That feeling of community is evaporating but the odor lingers. Loved your verses.
