- Decrepit Life Dappling Shadows -

                                                       quote by poet

Near the river I saw the decrepit aged man
    Striped of outerwear
even though the snow reached his knees

The ground was inextricably bound by frost
Bare feet in worn-out shoes across the footpath
one shaky foot in front of the other

His body weak, but his will strong
    - fighting as best he can
    focused on survival
There is a lot of weight on his shoulders

The world occasionally feels as a bubble
    with distorted truths,
    falsehoods and veneers
    Poor ignorant people

With glimmer of hope in the pitch dark
a warm home and a bottle of gin
Is that too much to ask?

Congratulations on your win with a lovely sympathetic poem juxtaposing two extremes. Particularly loved the lines" The world occasionally feels as a bubble with distorted truths, falsehoods and veneers". Wishing you a cheerful day.

A touching poem Anne-Lise. You captured his hardship admirably. It's as if you used feelings instead of words to write it.

I have seen so many in such disastrous and inhospitable conditions, but holding their heads high and having an indomitable will. We can't simply call them decrepit. Well done, dear Anne. I have been away from home for a week and I have to catch up with so much. So wonder if I will be able to enter this contest.

no it ain't too much Anne, but so many struggle like this man, just to survive. Thankyou for sharing such a tender moment, I hope he found a bottle of gin and some boots somewhere, !

I feel really sorry for him. You described his "decrepit" nature so well, we could all sympathize.

Anne-Lise, I look at this in a positive way. The old man apparently has a strong will. If that makes him happy and he is able to function, it's not a terrible life. We have to be very careful if we choose to interfere. He may be a very proud individual. Hard to know unless we actually meet and interact. Smiles!!

Hi Anne-Lise, I always feel sad when reading such writes especially when they are so well written. You paint such a realistic picture on your canvas of words. Good luck in the contest but with this write you shouldn't need luck. The picture fits your poetry so well. He doesn't ask for much.Your friend always ..... Mike. XXX

Dear Anne, you posted an excellent poem about the decrepit. Everything helps, even a smile or a nice word, indeed.

Gentle and kind poem. Even little attention, kind words, smile bestowed on him goes a long way in his heart.

Very sensitively written lines, Anne-Lise. Creature comforts such as his wants are little to ask for a life long lived.
