My cousin tells me that "There is not money in poetry, and no poetry in money", I would to challenge that, not only for myself but for all of us out there who enjoy poetry as a hobby. I want to help create a future where those of us who enjoy our writing time, but have to fit it around work and our many other commitments, could get some financial reward for our poetry. In turn I envision that extra money allowing extra time for more writing. That is my dream.

To aid that dream (as I really have no idea where to start), I have joined Poetry Soup where I have rubbed poetic shoulders with many awesomely talented, knowledgeable poets. This while not only being an immense pleasure has already started to grow my poetry (I have decided that "Grumpy Old Man", is a 'Dramatic Verse", something I had not even considered before), and I've written my first two "Tanka". I must thank you all for continually opening my eyes to a greater poetic world.

I have also placed two poetry videos on "you tube", there I am know as "poetscott37", and am working on more. I have a twitter account, on which I am again "poetscott37", would love to see you there.

There have been numerous magazine submissions, and competition entries, from all of which success remains elusive. My one tip here is that if this is where you wish to go with your writing, remember that most often only unpublished works will be accepted. Poems that you upload here will most probably be deemed as published.

That's no doubt more than enough for now.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to our continued poetic friendships.

Cheers
Scott

Congrats on your first blog post, Scott :) I reconciled many years ago that there was no money to be made from my poetry, but that has never been a deterrent. I'm a "fame-monger"; I'd rather be known than be paid, but wouldn't be averse to the best of both worlds. I've long considered self-publishing and asking privately owned bookstores to give my booklets out for free. The sad fact is that most people simply don't care for poetry anymore- that it is basically an archaic, dying art unless put to use in songs or other such mediums. I'd like to be the Shelley of my generation, but doubt this shall ever come to fruition, unless posthumous. Thanks for sharing this blog and hope you write more!

Thanks for your comment, sorry but I've only just worked out how to read these comments. What I think about this issue is that there are a great many poets out there 21000+ on Poetry Soup alone, according to the front page. And this is not the only on-line poetry community. Also there are a huge amount of poetry groups out there, the biggest one in my home town has recently expanded to two sites (sadly, don't live in my home town). So I think there are a great number of people out there who are interested in poetry. Now if all these people bought 1 or 2 poetry books a year (self published or otherwise), you'd be selling quite a few books. Maybe we could be our own market. After all I'm sure musicians buy music. But how can we spread an idea like this?

Yup getting appreciated for your joy is a lifetime of work. Writing well is one thing and getting published a whole other job! Just keep at it [both things, writing & submitting]

Scott, nice to have you here. one of my favorite poets, and newest mentor. I enjoy your persona, and friendship. I find life interesting when learning from someone who is growing him self as a poet / writer. Thank you for opening my eyes, on a few details around my poems. luv~ Linda
