Rico

Blog Posted by Susan Lawrence: 12/15/2022 6:54:00 AM

It is with a heavy heart that I write these words . Dear Rico , the King of Limericks has passed out of this life to his next one . I have been in touch with his daughter the last few weeks . As many noted he was an almost daily presence here at Soup , posting and commenting on others work. I knew Rico for over 30 years . Even though I did had not seen him physically since before Covid , he was always there . It was he who told me about this wonderful place called Poetry Soup !  He was also the first person to bring me to The Coming of Age Ceremony of young Apache women in Whiteriver AZ. The ceremony changed my life and inspired many paintings . I have continued to visit with my children ever since.  Rico had a huge heart and was unbelievably  intelligent always learning and seeking new knowledge. He will be missed tremendously. I am lucky to be in touch with his daughter . I too wondered why he had not been posting so I reach out to her . He passed peacefully yesterday .

To Rico, Aloha. I'm saddened to hear of your passing and say now that I have been inspired by your limericks and your visits of Aloha. I write one here in your honor and our hometown, and in the spirit of the season.~~There's a Santa that came to Waikiki bay~~ On an outrigger canoe that Christmas Day~~ He wore a grass hula skirt~~ And a large Aloha shirt~~ His course went astray and he opted to play~~Best wishes to his family, friends and fellow poets..Aloha.

Hello fellow Soup Poets . What an overwhelming response to my note about Rico. Such a gracious outpouring of love and condolences. I feel a huge collective hug between us all and that gives me some solace . Thank you . I wish I had more information. I was as in shock as the rest of you . I just found out he had been very ill when I reached out to his daughter a few weeks ago. I will see her in mid January when I go to CA and have more clarity . I need to give her a big hug and be in her presence . Big hugs to all of you and I will keep you posted as I am able. Susan

Susan, that’s sad to hear. At PS, we are all connected, sharing heart’s musings as whispered by our soul. Death of form is inevitable and we can do nothing but accept it in surrender, rekindling memory of the joyful moments spent together, knowing we remain entwined vibrationally in the womb of universal consciousness forever.

Susan, I've noticed that Rico hasn't been around that much. He would comment on my poetry at different times, and I've commented on a few of his. So sad hearing this news. He will be missed, but not forgotten. I'm keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs, Brandy

This is dreadful news, Susan. But better to know than wonder forever, so thank you for letting us all know. Rico was always there with a witty retort or a pertinent fact, to the point that I often wondered how on Earth one man could have so much knowledge. Sleep well, Rico, you’ll be sorely missed.

Thank you Susan, I’m so sorry to hear this sad news, the soup has lost a unique character in Rico, he did what he done, only better than anyone else (‘The king of Limericks indeed he was’ ‘Madcap wizard, unlike the one from oz’ ‘I hope he passed quick’ ‘Not prolonged or sick’ ‘And honestly wish, this was a faux pas) Cheers David

Susan - Tom just let me know that you posted this. Thank you for doing so. I truly feel like I have lost a friend. Rico was such a steady and supportive presence on the Soup that I always knew that I’d get at least one response to every daily poem that I wrote. It was obvious to me that something had happened to him the first day he didn’t post a limerick but I’m so sad to hear that he’ll never be posting one again. I will miss him very much. Condolences to his family and friends….. Ilene Bauer
