Poetry soup syllable counter

Blog Posted by Robert Stoner Jr: 3/15/2015 4:08:00 PM

I may be behind on this information but the poetry soup syllable counter cannot be trusted. I just found this out as it made my contest entry disqualified for wrong syllable count. I wonder now how many other writings I've done are wrong as well. Anyone have a trust worthy syallable counter in use?

I thank Rob Carmack, contest sponsor, for pointing out this error when I asked for submission information. If I hadn't followed up on my works failure I would have continued using this flawed tool.Thank you Rob.

robert, this has been pointed out many times in the past, by me, Nette and others. I wish they would just take that stinking thing down and put up one like Nette uses. When you do one of her contests, she gives the name of the link for it! Also, who cares about syllable counters anyway. Just use your best judgement!

Rob, I agree the syllable counter on this site is not reliable, I use How Many Syllables.com and it seems to have been accurate for me so far anyways . . .

Certain words are more of a problem than others because of pronunciation. For example: every. Most people say "ev-ry" but pronunciation can be "ev-e-ry". When using syllable counters (I've tried many) some say 2 sybs and some say 3sybs. It's best to use the syllable counter recommended by the sponsor or ask. With that particular word, I'm still not sure which is correct!

Robert, I use 'The Free Dictionary' .com http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ also it's informative as well. Give it a try as I can't go with the PS syllable counter also. Great post, let's hope they get it fixed, if not I'll continue to use the above, James.

I always use how many syllables - i wish their was a 100% trustworthy one but I agree with Rob this too does have its problems BUT is much better than the soup one. I do feel if you have used a syllable counter and written on your poem which one you used then you shouldn't be penalised in a contest... purely my opinion of course! At school we encourage the students to say the word and 'clap' the syllables! :-) Hugs Jan xx

lol Jan if I clapped the syllables I'd look like a Mexican hat dancer :o) I'll just be much more careful in my efforts.

Robert, You are welcome. Andrea has warned others before. I use howmanysyllables.com, but I have found errors with that as well, but much less frequent than PS's counter. It is a PITA, but you are better off checking each word via a dictionary, and if checking meter, you may have to check a word with several dictionaries.
