HONOR ROLL STUDENTS

Blog Posted by Margaret Okubo: 11/1/2008 8:24:00 AM

One day I read these words on a bumper sticker. My son is an Honor roll student at .......school.

I was certainly happy for him and for his proud parents but I could not help but wonder how the other children in his class felt at not reaching this goal. Many of them study hard and make every effort to be on the honor roll but have not managed to achieve their goal.

What happens to them now? Do they feel discouraged? Do they lose hope? I know the intention of the school is good but I honestly think we should consider the feelings of those left behind.

Alas, two days ago I read these words on another bumper sticker. I couldn't believe my eyes. ALL STUDENTS AT ........SCHOOL ARE HONORED STUDENTS. Yipeee!!!!!!.

Give us your thoughts on this.

I'm for the bumper stickers. Those who work hard deserve them. Others should be praised for trying. It is up to the parents to reinforce the positive within their child, rather than dwell on the negative. Every child is precious and has their own unique gift to the world, and those gifts should be embraced. It's not the bumper sticker causing any harm, but rather the lack of insight to appreciate and love a child completely, whether they make the honor roll or not. Love, Shar

Never made the Honor Roll. It was there to strive for. Never felt so driven. We didn't have bumper stickers then. Maybe I may have tried.

I do believe there needs to be rewards for effort and achievement. The Puritans decided over 200 years ago that they would eliminate rewards for the producers so the non-producers wouldn't feel bad and this would give them incentive because they would feel better about themselves and bring their level of productivity up. 20 years later their society was mired in failure. The non-producers remained the same but the productive ones came down to their level. There should have been a reward for effort. I do not believe any child should be made to feel bad when they are doing the best they can. There needs to be a caring positive reinforcement for even the smallest achievement. We need to nurture positive feelings. Everyone from a King to a homeless person who has lost everything brings something special to the table. God Bless, Meg. Vince

Sometimes, when we place those stickers or anything else of what we have achieved, it might be a "push" to others where they feel that they are filled with power in achieving the next time. For a person with a strong will in doing whatever is desired, even if it was to climb Mount Everest and can’t afford it, shall be able to do it. The key here is faith and the will which shall always call: “I can do it!!!” In the end, we shouldn't tie our happiness and joy, but we should not brag about it. Accomplishment is the key to happiness, but there is a very thin thread that separated it from the pure happiness and joy to the extreme bragged happiness and show off. Let those who succeeded raise the flag of success, for who knows, they might inspire those with low morals to step up and follow the path the path to their goal.

Well those who are on the honor roll list must be congratulated for they have achieved what they have been dreaming of. In my opinion, a person who succeeded in reaching his dream is in fact a hard worker who puts whatever he wants in mind and works till the end till he achieves it~ he has a strong will~ That person should celebrate what he has done even if it was with bumper stickers, but he shouldn't brag about it. On the other hand, there are those who didn't accomplish their goal. But, if they really wanted to be on the honor roll list, then they wouldn't give up and would keep on working till the end. It would be like a competition where they see that others have achieved and so can I. We should not prevent ourselves from celebrating what we achieved. Sometimes, when we place those stickers or anything else of what we have achieved, it might be a "push" to others where they feel that they are filled with power in achieving the next time.
