Defining Politics

If you were ever asked to define the term "Politics", what will your definition of it be? When I first started to think about this, I realized that all I knew about the meaning of politics was only associated with the news. Therefore, I began to think of an actual definition and only came up with a bunch of clichéd sentences that had the word "manipulative" in them. So I decided to visit dictionary.com and to look for a definition there. To be honest, it wasn't so satisfying either. For, most of the website's definitions had the word "political" in them which means that, in essence, they didn't actually define the word. Is all our knowledge of politics only limited to the news? Has the quintessential meaning of politics been marred by the media? Or is politics in its nature marred? Share your thoughts and try to come up with a definition that doesn't have the word "political" in it.

politics= first spell SWORD. then take the S and put it in the back. now you have WORDS. politics is what you have before war or the sword.

imagine,a wheel with thousands of spokes attached to the center,as each spoke also has it's opposite....or polarity of difference...our earthly existence,is all about the process of bringing our soul,spirit,into equilibrium,as we all face the quagmire of everyday.Some step into quicksand,and become cemented into this political disagreements of self.....politics is a plastic nature,which is only trying to synthesis a majority agreement...could be wrong tho...but if there was a clear definition,we would have an actual system that worked for everybody....peace to you young one....jay

politics seems to me like a gory game, a sour sport, an erroneous endeavor, a rugged race. I couldn't forget this statement. ‘‘Politicians only think of the next election while statesmen think of the next generation. expecially in my homeland , politics is kind of meant for the wicked, wayward wealthy wolves. Poli (many) tics (blood sucking insects). I believe it is the art of selling people on eating manure, then charging them (taxes) for mouthwash, to get rid of the taste they left. It is the art of living your life with no concept of ethics or morals, i.e., Nancy Pelosi pressuring congress to exempt American Samoa from minimum wage laws to protect her husband's stock in Star-Kist. The art of stealing billions while spending trillions. A politician is what is left of a human being after the heart and soul have been removed. The art of doing nothing for a lifetime then writing a book on your accomplishments. Can you tell I'm a big fan? Vince

I understand politics to act or to drive a situation in one's interests with all the beliefs, faith, morals going to hell.

If you define politics, Young One, using the present as a gauge, you'll throw up! because it connotes everything bad about human interaction. Deal-making, under-the-table deals, power grab, backstabbing, character assasination, you name it. It's a far cry from politics' origin which was good and noble that reflected humanity's more uplifting and shining attributes, man's basic nobility to aim for the betterment of society. At the old Greek agoras in olden times, politics was about the free exchange of ideas in order to come up with the best ways to uplift the state and the individuals. Politics then had a good ring to it, unlike now. Where once it was a source of pride to be a politician, now you've got to be thick-skinned - and shameless - to be one.

guess I am not much for super intellectual discussions, sweetie. For me, when I hear that word politics the word "boring" comes into my mind. I loved history class in school but when it turned to politics, my mind just went to the moon! LUv, Andrea PS Chris below here is really into this! Just like my son, who loves debate and became a lawyer. I always enjoyed many discussions with my son until the topic turned to politics!

My definition would be governing by force and manipulation. If we only listen to one-sided news reports, we only have one side of the story. I think if America did away with the two-party system and had everyone run as independents who didn't have to follow a herd, we'd be a lot better off. Interesting blog, Farah.
