What Rhymes 2: Cross-Border Disorder - Nina Parmenter's Blog

Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I have been dipping in and out of poetry since I was very young - in fact one of my most treasured possessions is a book of poems I wrote when I was six. (That and my copy of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes - which I still love to this day!) As a teenager I used to gift little rhymes to my friends to cheer them up but I never seriously continued my scribbling into adulthood.

If you’d told me a year ago how much poetry I’d be writing today, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My brain was fogged by baby brain and, unbeknown to me, an undiagnosed illness. Towards the end of 2017, the baby brain began to improve, I got the illness under control, and with a burst of joy at its new-found clarity and creativity, my brain started to spew forth poetry as never before! I seized the moment, started a blog (called “It All Rhymes”) and with that going down well, joined Poetry Soup in January 2018. So far, I’ve not looked back!

In “real life”, I’m a Marketing Manager and I live in Wiltshire, UK with my fabulous husband and two wonderful, exhausting boys.

What Rhymes 2: Cross-Border Disorder

Blog Posted:4/23/2019 11:36:00 AM

Ah, the English language. Finest invention to have come out of these fair isles if you ask me. And a language that, here on Soup, unites us all. Until we start rhyming.

Before I joined Soup, it had never occurred to me that rhymes are not universal. Take me for instance. I’m from Southwest England. My accent is Southern English with a country burr. Keira Knightley after she’s been out on the rum with Captain Jack Sparrow. The queen falls on hard times and becomes a Victorian servant girl. That kinda thing.

In my simple island bumpkin blitheness, I have submitted poems to North American judges not realising that, for the judge, “dawn” probably doesn’t rhyme with “corn”, but DOES rhyme with “on”, which apparently doesn’t rhyme with “shone”! And it gets worse... “carves” doesn’t rhyme with “paths”, but “socks” apparently rhymes with “talks”. (Still haven’t got over that one!)

And that’s just me, being British. I had a look through some poems from some New Zealand Soupers. Sure enough, didn’t take long to find “there” rhyming with “fear” - does that rhyme? Yes it does, in New Zealand! And I’m guessing poets from India, South Africa, Nigeria... in fact all over the world have examples. And then you have regional variations... for my Dad (from Northern England), “book” rhymes with “spook” - for me, it doesn’t, and I’m sure the examples I’ve given above don’t apply to everyone in each respective country either. Minefield!!

I think it would be pretty dull and depressing if we didn’t write in our own accents, so, despite having been disqualified from contests for non-rhyming rhymes, I don’t tend to adapt what I write to the judge’s accent. Sometimes I out a begging note at the bottom: “FORGIVE ME! I’M BRITISH!”

As a judge I have now learnt to at least have a think about whether the entry might be in a different accent before I call a rhyme “bad” -particularly if the rest of the rhymes are good. I drew the “dawn” and “on” example from an entry into one of my contests... the rhyming was great throughout, and then when I came across that one I recoiled slightly, and only twigged to try it “in American” on the second read!”)

Sometimes though, in any accent, my rhymes are terrible. I recently entered Constance’s contest rhyming “squirrel” and “giggle”. I quite forgot that some of my transatlantic friends pronounce squirrel like this (forgive me): squrrrrrrl. (I did say forgive me...) For me it’s squi-rul so it rhymes with gig-gul right? RIGHT?? No, it doesn’t really, but I do love a diabolically bad rhyme. :-)

Ha, This is so true. I'm American and recently had to put myself into the mind of a Scotsman in order to read his poetry. It's a good thing I have some Scottish ancestry or I might not have been compelled to finish it. The first few lines threw me and I had to think a minute; turns out it was a great poem! When in doubt, I'll look it up on a couple of rhyme sights, just to make sure it will work. Great blog!

Haha that must have been quite fun though! Sometimes if I’ve picked up that someone is a different nationality, I say the words out loud in a really bad hammy version of their accent lol!
Date: 4/23/2019 4:53:00 PM
Nina, your rhyming of squi-rul and gig gul did make this gir ul smile a lot. And of course, my Canadian accent said NO, this does not rhyme but after considering accents as you explain in your blog and the international aspect of this site, I think it is okay to not conform to strict rhyming dictionaries all the time. And it is was just a fun poem with some bad rhyming, but delightful none the less...

Thank you Constance! Yes of course rhyming dictionaries like are problematic for me as they are American rhyming dictionaries and don’t include things which are perfectly good rhymes in English (and also of course include some rhymes that don’t work for my accent at all!) So I usually avoid contests where the judge says they will refer to them. I go off and giggle at squirrels instead ;-)

Note: My new sonnet was born from first stanza comment made on my having read both Nina's blog titled, What Rhymes 2: Cross-Border Disorder and then my immediate reading of M.L. Kiser's new poem, titled, "Stars Above". I got started writing and I simply could not stop..... Dedicated to you my friends, Nina Parmenter and M.L. Kiser because your words given and sweet verses inspired the creation of this new piece. With my grateful thanks..

My friend, your musings are anything but witless. Great information and insight you gave on rhyming, a subject which is near and dear to this old poet's heart.

I have found that when judging contests to be flexible with end rhymes. If I can see the possibility then it's okay. After all, the poet's intent is more important than my own habits.

No, Nina, unless you make a practice of communicating with the dead. At those seances you hold in that deserted English castle.

Actually come to think of it, there wouldn’t be much point shouting at Beethoven would there?!

Yeah I’d definitely put Mozart in a go-cart. And shout at Beethoven cos he left the gate open.

No SOS, now you'd be plagiarizing, but in the end, yes.

Mozart/go cart? Now I'm playing...

Yes, SOS, you could. Though the pronunciation is different it would still be an acceptable end rhyme.

could I do Cozart/Mozart? my intent is pure and true :)

(2) And this is an international community as well, (the Philippines alone has dozens of dialects, many mixed) ... crazy stuff, but it's good to remind folks of the importance of giving others some slack in this area, and when in doubt, give the benefit. I just adore the discussions of Sociolinguistics and Dialectology, and the extraordinary influences behind the variations, (Orthography, too, especially non-linear, which I believe we'll eventually progress to). What a wonderfully thoughtful blog and an interesting and important consideration for us all. Awesome stuff, Me Babber!! :-) <3

Oh, there is still rigid structure, (or CAN be, I should say), and even if there wasn't, there's always Internal Rhyme and Free Verse ... I think my thoughts are already "unbound", and it's no blessing or advantage, lol. I doubt it will come to be in my lifetime, thankfully - I might be considered "normal" - yikes! :-D

Gosh, non-linear orthography! I don’t think we’ll give a stuff what rhymes with what by then since the text will have no beginning and no end... and neither will our thoughts... forget giggling at squirrels, we’ll be tickling infinities... ;-)

The British accent alone has a number of "locale" variations, not to mention Scottish, Irish, Welsh, (this stuff fascinates me), and "American" English, well, I'll tell you, that is far from universal as well - Florida Southern, Deep Southern, Texas Southern, Cajun Southern, NCY (Bronx, Westchester County, Brooklyn, Manhattan - all their own "twists"), Chicago, (annoys me), Cleveland, West Coast, Midwest, Bostonian, Down East, (my area - also annoys me - I went to international prep school, so I avoided it, god bless) ... oh, you get the idea. There really IS no norm, and that makes for a lot of interesting poetry/contest issues, lol. (continued)
