I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

As the tectonic plates beneath the Soup continue to shift I thought I'd ask my fellow Soupers just what it is that shakes you up.

  • You might have an issue with this site and suggest how it can be improved?
  • You might have a personal dilemma you're struggling with and need some advice?
  • You might like to volunteer some commentary on things in general?
  • Or shed some light on something...

For instance say...

  • Is Joachim Pheonix your favourite Joker? If not, who is?
  • Is it right that the most divisive little girl in the world be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize?
  • If my best friend's wife cheated on him in a moment of weakness do I tell him or her? Would you want to know?
  • Is it wrong to collect the morning newspaper in my Y Fronts (underpants)?

This blog will not self-censor or self-destruct in 48 hours but it may well self-indulge!

What I can never understand is the complacency of this site at not trying to improve the foot traffic and readership. This site is the best. It should try to be better, especially being the home of the best poets and poems imo. On HP I swim in deeper pool of views, here a puddle, and it had an effect on me. The tools HP uses are the same that PS can use (that is if they had the foresight and peek at their neighbor's thriving garden of blooms)-reposting poems, poet having collections, favorites, suns.-all of which stir the viewership. From what I see here, the reality is that PS does not want to evolve. To which I can not understand- a twitch here, a twitch there improves counts and ads rev.

mark i checked out your profile on HP. while it's true you had a good run on this poem, I checked a dozen or so others and you're getting about the same or less views on them than you get here. the simple truth is if you want more views/comments ya gotta play the tit for tat game with as many as possible. sad but deffo true

Connie, I agree with you that view-wise PS is a puddle and HePo is a deeper pool. Three days ago I posted “Limited Immortality” on PS, HePo and Twitter. So far I have 40 views on PS, 506 views on HePo, and 928 views on Twitter. But I also agree with Tommy’s assessment of HePo. PS continues to give me the better experience, but it also has its challenges.

If you are referring to Hello Poetry I was there for a while and found it to be a bit of a drag, with little sincere communication going on. If your poem was trending and reposted it was fairly cool, if not somewhat dry

I have nothing to get off my chest, realizing years ago humans are going to be humans and find their own corners to hide in a fight for whether it makes sense or not, the question you asked allowed for debate about trying to fix what can never be human digs a ditch another thinks it should be wider, another deeper, knows, I'm human

JOKER is excellent and Joaquin is one of my favorite actors, on a level few others reach ... that said, Heath Ledger's joker is my favorite performance of that particular role, as his effectiveness at conveying that sinister, darker-than-dark evil comic was beyond extraordinary, (replay the line "Look at me!!" - bone-chilling). Phoenix came close, but Ledger edged him out FOR ME ... by a knife. ;-) The site? The serious "issues" are all too painfully obvious to most - play the game, or pay the price. I always get the paper in bare feet and sleep pants/shorts, (even in snow) - nobody on my street is up at 5A but me ... and the crows I feed, lol. ( )

On the list that is generated by 'My Poems that are Member Favorites', it would be nice if the number in the 'Favorite Count' column would generate a list of those who have the poem as a favorite. This could be perk for the lifers.

I don't think blogs should be used to post your own poem or lead someone to it, if it's an example for a contest it can be included in the contest rules. Also, I think it is rude to hog the blog space and push everyone else's blogs down the list. When one person out of thousands has 50% of the blog posts it is obviously excessive

Relative to another blog, just because you can doesn't mean you should. It's akin to finding your favorite appetizer at a party and eating it all yourself and leaving little or none for everyone else. There are infinite other analogies.

Suzette, you're wasting your time, IMHO. Most contest sponsors are poets who's poetry gets little attention... and for a reason. I know that's harsh but scroll down through the contests then look up the sponsors home page. It's why I typically don't enter. Unless I can honestly appraise the sponsor as someone as good or better than me how can I in good conscience permit them to judge my work? This is one reason why Souper sponsored contests will forever have issues and controversies

Not too long ago, i checked out the top 100 poems, which for me being here 10 years now, was a novelty being it was the first time ever, my idea was to start reading from the bottom upwards, so i read number 100, and it was a good poem, and went to make a comment, but behold, there were none there, yet i'd posted a couple of days previously, and received 4 comments and was nowhere. thinking that i may not know the protocol regarding how one manages to make these tables, left it there, its only when i read a blog like this one, that yes maybe we need so sort of how these poems of us all are measured,,and do we really need them to be measured??????

I do that as well Andrea but often the person commenting doesn't have a new poem posted or hasn't posted one in some time. I know many on here who handle it like you do, there is nothing wrong with that but for people like me who want to say thank you, it is ridiculous that we can only reply to two at a time. It's just stupid that it would be like that. It is almost as if the site doesn't want us communicating with each other.

PEEVES: Contests - three places please (no participation trophys); Blogs used for Blogs, not contest announcements or vanity revelations; POTD be actually worthy of POTD (concur SoS); Maybe jetison POTD and laud POTW; Limitation of poetry submissions/day (who can write or read those maximum-multi poesy dumps?); Big personalities need a pause button before telling all stuff we don't need to know or already do (bullying). ENCOURAGEMENT: All should unashedly submit, comment, relish, grow, learn, enhance, and elevate all things PS Poetic.

I have always wanted them to limit posts. I think they had some rule about it, but it's not listened to. That's why they made two separate lists: one that just shows the most recent post made by any one person. Keith, you are right, I saw one poet a long time ago who re-titled many of her poems and kept posting them up with different titles. The shocker, they were one to three line religious poems looking like her own proverbs. Coming up with many different titles for them was quite the feat.

Eliminating the arbitrary rating system, adding an audio feature, adding a story section, sponsoring a few admin judged contests. I honestly don't have any further recommendations for enhancement. Agreed, Tommy. I think they have done so many improvements. I asked them one time how they were determining the Best Poems and they did not give a straight answer, just said "a variety of criteria" or something like that. Anyway, I rarely look at that list unless someone draws my attention to it or tells me I am high on the list. I think everyone here has different expectations and different pet peeves. They will never satisfy everybody.

If I was to be a tad critical I might suggest say POTD is a misnomer. They need to actually read what the software spits out before posting I would argue. Similarly the top 100 poems list is shall we say highly questionable. The contests are okay if that's your thing. I can't comment on any bickering or squabbles - I stay well out of that sort of thing. ;-)
