I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

The last time I went to a movie theatre was like five years ago when I took my son to see some hobbit movie I can't even remember. Last night I went with my now 19 year old son to see Quentin Tarantino's latest extravaganza as I am a big fan of his work. It was such a joy to see a movie that didn't have a superhero or a monster in it (the Manson family aside). I found it fascinating in a voyeuristic kind of way and very entertaining. I identified with so much of the characterisations, the fashions,  the cultural and political references of the times which a younger audience understandably would not but my son enjoyed it tremendously. Lancer was one of my favourite TV shows growing up. However, there were some scenes that I thought were superfluous to the plot and its telling but I enjoyed it very much. Tarantino attracts a lot of controversey with his "gratuitous" stylised  violence, his portrayal of women and people of colour and his re-telling of history but he is a filmmaker of the highest level. For those of you who haven't seen the movie but intend to I won't reveal the ending...but I loved it!

Can't wait for his next movie!

Mixed emotions RE Quentin - he's made some good movies and some horrid ones, (as most of us creative types, it's always a growing process). That said, I liked this one, (with real-life monsters), but found some of the trailers to be glorifying the Manson clan ... not surprising, keeping in mind the priorities of advertising these days. Nice write, Keith - such discussions keep this ol' world spinning! (I'm more of a Ridley Scott fan myself). ;o) Really looking forward to his take on the Star Trek reboot, (supposed to direct the next one, if they can convince Chris Pine and Chris Pratt).

Greg, I could fill the role of Picard but who would you play I wonder?

I'd forgotten he did FC - that was an excellent effort, and would be a good option for another Trek movie, reboot or otherwise.

He directed First Contact, a high ender with little dispute

Sorry, SOS - Frakes is about as charismatic as a hedge of nettles, lol ... all in good fun. As I say, to each their own - that's what keeps this world spinning. ;o)

Ha! Yeah, he DOES, Keith, lol! Love the reboots ... you have to appreciate the original series and the original movies, I guess - the newer series were alright, but lacked the magic and originality. To each his/her own. The reboots have been progressiively darker, I'd like to see that continue, and Tarantino would be perfect, (I'd be fine with a director like Abrams again, or Scott, Cuaron, Jackson, even Mike Newell or David Yates, among others).

I'd love to see Tarantino do Star Trek. Hell, he looks like a Romulan.

If they wanna do another trek movie bring back Jonathan frakes or give Levar Burton a crack. These guys know trek. I hate the reboots

It was an awesome movie and I agree with your review wholeheartedly. One of Quentin's less violent ones actually!!

Thanks, Keith. In my opinion, his movie was like a tribute to the time I was growing up in as a child. I really loved the nostalgic feeling to it. I thought the ending really rocked. If only....

Andrea, I am interested to see your thoughts as you are the queen movie buff around here. Sometimes I wish I had a flame thrower in my pool shed!

Can't say I'm a fan, as I disdain movies or other forms of entertainment that glorify violence and illicit sex. Hey, we need to do a humorous collab some day. Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.

About six months ago I got on a "Hitler rant in the bunker" site where you insert your own dialogue and did a parody about the Soup but I had trouble uploading it. I thought it was funny as hell. Have you ever seen those parodies?

Seriously though wouldn't it be fun to do a song that pokes (harmless) fun at many of the colorful personalities here, ourselves included?

Violence in movies, like life, is all about context for me. Some would argue the Road Runner cartoons are excessively violent. As for the other concern, perhaps I'm not the best one to answer that. When it comes to the sex thing, I have been known to elicit. Mostly I beg! A collab eh? What did you have in mind?
