THE SOUP A LITTLE BITTER FOR SOME! - Keith Trestrail's Blog

I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

THE SOUP A LITTLE BITTER FOR SOME!

Just a few observations I'd like to share. To all those amateur poets out there who feel this site is not all that it could be or that their poetic voice is not being shouted from the mountain tops I say just keep plugging away. After reading a recent post I know of at least one member who feels unwelcome and unsupported in their efforts. I'm sure there are others too who feel a little underwhelmed with the feedback and recognition they seek.

I personally don't give a rat's arse if I don't win a CONTEST or I don't make the BEST NEW POEMS or BEST ALL TIME top 100 list, or I don't get a hundred hits on a post in the first 24 hours. I've seen those lists - they're a joke! Just be happy to write and post and fill that creative expressive need inside you. If you want to be part of a mutual admiration society then you're going to have to play the game...if that's what you're looking for!

There are some fine poets on this site - no question. But don't confuse popularity with ability, or equate stats with talent, or mindless generic comments with praise. Just write and engage with your fellow poets and enjoy the ride. I've learnt so much in the few short years I've been here and I appreciate everyone who has helped me in that time. I'm a far far better writer for it today.

Cheers

PS: Trolls welcome...but behave!

Some excellent advice & points, Keith. 'Quality' trumps 'quantity'; 'genuine' trumps 'generic' or 'fake'. Conforming to please & gain favour from others for whatever reason produces a compromised expression. Each of us creative types should seek our own 'unique style' & then work continually to improve upon it. All the best. :) ~ Artsie

Artsie, are you a ladie? Stop horsing around. This is far too sensible for one of my blogs! Hugs.

I just stopped by, Chum, to let you know that Tim Ryerson has passed away. He would agree with everything you've said, I think.. as he was humble, kind and just enjoyed writing. Hugs... sad day...

It is sad when one of our number passes. I didn't have much to do with Tim and had no idea he was unwell. Makes you appreciate every day a little more. Nice to see you again Cinders. Stick around.

I agree. First, the value of writing is in writing. I use contest themes as writing prompts; they're a fun exercise, but not a measure of my ability. The number of poems posted daily is overwhelming; I can't expect people to randomly come across my work, nor can I be expected to keep up with everybody. I discover poets I like by reading through contest winners and POTD and then following those that speak to me; I try to visit everybody who visits my page and leaves a comment, and have discovered many of my favorite poets this way. Nobody can read everything posted; we all have to be selective. But repeatedly complaining about a lack of views won't inspire me to seek out your poems.

Spoken like a true physicist. Now that Hawking is gone you are now officially the smartest of us all. Physicists rock!

I too have seen some who feel unwelcomed; and unfortunately I cannot blame them. They don't exactly know how things work here. You give very good advice Keith. One thing remains the same, if you want people to read your work you have to read and comment on others. For some it's a matter of tit for tat but for many that's the only way they're going to come across your name. Think of it this way, when you add a new poem it is only on that list for a day, sometimes less, before it gets bumped off; and then how is anyone going to know to read your work. While commenting is very important, if readership is what you're looking for, I don't recommend a copy and paste method. Be genuine, actually read peoples poems, and comment according to that poem.

You mentioned Contests. Pet peeve (who cares??): Why not have 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Make the Contest mean something. Mediocrity gets you a 14th Place Honorable Mention...huh?? Like I said, petty Pet Peeve. Is that Trolling??? Not my game. Take care. :-)))

Trolls used to live under bridges...21st C. has changed the sound of English. PS has its place on the poetic spectrum. And, yes, there are some profoundly fine poems on this Site. Like most human endeavors any flaws get all the play. My hope is that all poets grow (and get respect enough for constructive criticism). Otherwise they will remain static in any hoped for growth. No reason "rose are red, violets are blue" can't be fun. Just not always very interesting or even "poetic". $.02 ---- :-)))

I have found PoetrySoup a great place for intermingling as well as for getting & giving inspiration. What it isn't is a place to passively wait to be discovered. The most fun I have had is to find poets whose writings resonate with me and build bridges.

It is most definitely not obvious which PSoupers are open to constructive criticism and honest feedback, I tend to offer suggestions with a SoupMail and not on a public comment.

I totally feel like you; "Just be happy to write and post and fill that creative expressive need inside you." "Just write and engage with your fellow poets and enjoy the ride." But I've only been here and writing for 2 or has it been 3 years :) oh well I don't remember. Good advise Keith... Hugs Eve

I agree as well. For me, the value of contests are the poems they inspire. Many of my poems would not have been written if it were not for the contests. And about 'confuse popularity with ability....', these issues can kill a writer's progression. Excellent blog for those who are willing and capable of seeing its truth.

Hey Robbo, about due to get "screwed" again! I'm waiting.
Date: 4/26/2018 9:31:00 AM
I believe you have expressed the essence of what posting on any site truly is, to write a poem share it with others then move on, for me a contest is just a way of writing about something I most likely wouldn't have thought of, I write sonnets and free verse most of the rest of the forms I find boring, but that's just me...as for those who believe their skill level is greater than it is...well writers who know, know...enough said about that...as for the skill of some on this site there are a few who have blown me away from time to time and that's not an easy thing to do, I'm honored to call them poetic friends...as for you, stay honest and blunt... there's a scratch on your sunglasses

Your observations expressed here are good ones and certainly truthful. I join in encouraging those who are truly interested in poetry and in writing poetry to accept that the realities involved in continuing the existence of this site may make it necessary to tolerate or even to encourage participation by those whose motives may be simply a quest for approval whether deserved or not. As you point out, there are indeed some good poets on this site, and they certainly merit thoughtful and supportive comments when appropriate.

Keith...after many years here, I still enjoy posting a poem that pops into my head and goes directly into soup, sure, I do scratch & start poems in journals (gawd they're everywhere in my condo!) but direct-drops are most fun...meeting new people...cool! like many here, my soup poems reflect my world, eg: obsessing about mushrooming soon in the nearby river valley forests, watching my Black Krim Tomato seedlings at 'bout 5" now! Soup is my outlet for reflection, it pleases me, maybe others too, and some have labelled my work "juvenile" cool with me! Forever Young!
