Poetry Anthology - Update!!!

Blog Posted:10/22/2019 5:10:00 AM

We are in the process of building an interface that will allow Soupers to submit up to three poems for review. We will let you know when and how you can begin submitting poems. However, submission is not a guarantee of inclusion.

Additionally, we will be contacting poets directly related to specific poems we want to include. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, make sure your poems are free of errors (grammar or otherwise) and ensure that the correct form of poetry is selected. This is very important.

Thanks, anyway. I sit here poetry broke Empty of the magic stroke This incantation I poke To be in this book, I stoke With other rich poet folk No magic dragon bespoke Sans invite sank tears that choke No knock on the door of croak I did wish, acorn to oak But reality, sigh, runs uncloak

(4) ... but I'm not always sure about it when posting pieces that were NOT written for contests, and would LOVE to learn to be more accurate and knowledgeable. Ignorance is only a negative thing when it's left to its own devices, but CAN be a useful tool for learning .... or even friendly communication! ;o)

Thank you so much, my friend, very thoughtful and helpful to me - I have learned more about poetry from you than any three others, and I am very grateful. Blessings.

Thank you SO much, Suzette - that is indeed very helpful - I shall peruse it faithfully! (And feel free to correct me if you ever notice a poem of mine not properly categorized, or not categorized as accurately as it could be). Blessings! :o) <3

(3) ... including those who may not be as versed in the more strict definitions of the types and styles. Why not identify the good pieces by their substance and quality, and if improperly (or incompletely) identified by the form, SUGGEST to the poet the correct one, or simply correct it and place it with the proper form? Aren't we here to learn and encourage others to grow? How can folks like me get a handle on correct forms if there's no one who will help us to do so? I personally would WELCOME such corrections and would love to learn more. I have gained a great deal of such knowledge by simply entering contests and following the rules regarding those forms ... (2) ... when it came to poetry forms, and I am still quite ignorant about such. I DO believe I am a relatively competent poet at this point, but I still question much when it gets to defining my work in those terms, and if I'm doing it wrong, how do I know?!? So, should folks like me - people who work hard to create quality work but don't know much about the technical terms - be limited and marginalized with such opportunities? I think that's (perhaps) putting confines on the anthology that could be dealt with better. This is a public site, and as such should be represented by a cross-section of ALL different types ... (1) Prep schools can be rather limited in the availability of course selection, and mine, while incorporating poetry into the English curriculum, didn't concentrate on it much, other than appreciation of substance. I always loved poetry because my mom not only recited it to us from an early age, but made us memorize many. However, while I won an award for writing, (the Payson-Bird Prize, first awarded to a freshman), I never took any of it seriously, and didn't start writing poetry until I joined The Soup three years ago. What I'm doing here is making excuses for my ignorance, for while I have learned much since joining here, I never learned anything (previously) but the basics ... (cont'd)

"Forms have their place in the learning process but not the art of true poetic expression." A creed I adopted well over 45 years ago. One which was greatly vilified here a mere 4 or 5 years ago.. hmmmmmmm. Nice to see its been stated other than by me,... strange tho' since my many times speaking on Heart, Soul, Message and Truth outweighing form restrictions/ rigid adherence-only got me judged very harshly by some here. A poet must stay true to his/her poetic spirit/soul..

True Robert, I think they only have their place within the confines of a specific contest or declaration of intent. I have never argued the artistic expression point except if a specific form noted then use that form correctly or not at all. On can respect what was without destroying its integrity. One can move on without burning all else in their path.

To follow up on Suzette's comments. One of the major issues other than generic examples being used incorrectly to display many forms it is exacerbated by the wildly incorrect use of the forms by the poets on poetry soup that are displayed without consideration. For instance probably 90% of all blank verse writes and many others are incorrectly written. My advice to TPS is to do like most other publications do unless they want to drive themselves insane making sure forms are "spot-on" and that is to eliminate form designation and totally concentrate on the artful presentation of message. Forms have their place in the learning process but not the art of true poetic expression.
