Poets' Quotes About Poetry - Gary Radice's Blog

I'm a married 60 year old Brit who lives near Liverpool, UK.

I started writing poetry as a hobby after taking retirement from my role as a Registered Mental Health Nurse working in the field of Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

Themes of the seaside, railways and the naivety of childhood crop up often in my poems and I like to write (usually in rhyme) just what I see, no matter how trivial that may be.

Although some of my work is based on my own personal experiences, I try to focus on imagery and places in time that are identifiable to the reader as well.

I also enjoy 'weaving' stories through my work and occasionally put my own spin on the classics.

Other than at school, the only poems I have ever written are those that you can read here at Poetry Soup.

If you have the time to view and comment on any of my work here then I would really appreciate it. I'm always open to constructive criticism.

Thank you

Gary

Poets' Quotes About Poetry

Blog Posted:2/2/2021 3:19:00 AM

Do you have any comments about any of the following quotes from poets about poetry?

Do you have a quote of your own as to what poetry means to you?

1  'Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.'  William Wordsworth

'Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.'  TS Eliot

'Poetry is the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.' Percy Bysshe Shelley

Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down  Robert Frost

'...nine-tenths of what passes as English poetry is the product of either careerism, or keeping one's hand in: a choice between vulgarity and banality.'   Robert Graves

Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people  Adrian Mitchell

I wish our clever young poets would remember my homely definitions of prose and poetry; that is prose; words in their best order; - poetry; the best words in the best order.'  S T Coleridge

Poetry is the journal of a sea animal living on land, wanting to fly in the air.' Carl Sandburg

'Poetry fettered fetters the human race.'  William Blake

10  If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.'  Emily Dickinson

11  'I've had it with these cheap sons of bitches who claim they love poetry but never buy a book.'  Kenneth Rexroth

12  It is always hard for poets to believe that one says their poems are bad not because one is a fiend but because their poems are bad.'  Randall Jarell

Gary I prefer the term 'verse freed ' rather than 'free verse' for the English translation of 'vers libre' (the original source) of the form..because ..yes..it is a form ...and there are 'requirements' thereto.( not many people know that as MC puts it)

I didn't know that..but I do now! :) Thanks to you Brian... and to Michael Caine of course. :)

Yes, Frost's was so good. However, when free verse is written WELL, it really is nice!

Agreed Andrea. :) Robert Frost's quote (4) refers to his opinion of free verse as "an excessive glorification of freedom over structure"...I wonder what Soupers think of that?

Gary, I love all the quotes you mention and I created one of my own in My Quotes that reads, "My writing is measured by the poems I write that take my breath away." _Constance

Hi Constance. Another great quote. There's so much passion and emotion invested in Soupers' poetry quotes here. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary. I think #3 has it only half right. With apologies to Percy Bysshe Shelley, many great poems record the most tragic and unhappy moments in a poet's mind and quite often in his/her life.

That could very well be, which would explain his one-sided thought at that moment in his life. I've always thought I wrote more vividly when facing some tragedy in my life, or at least I wrote more at those points in time.

Jenna, I thought the same when I read that and was somewhat surprised that he focused only on the positive emotions particularly so, because when he was a pupil at Eton College he was apparently bullied mercilessly. However, even as I'm writing this I'm wondering if the bullying may have been a reason for his quote here in that writing poetry took him to a nicer place.

Morning Gary. I like #4 :) A personal thought I always keep in mind, especially when reading critical or negative comments is "Poetry will always be a matter of perception, perspective, and personal taste. No amount of education or fame will ever change that."   ~FJ Thomas

A quote I wrote... “The best moments in a poets time, are those spent writing beautiful words to leave behind.”

I like #8. I see the symbolism. Because when times the poets words are caged in his mind there is an absolute freedom when they are released.

Gary,...poetry is just structured prose...at its best.. said aloud (just saying ..subjectively of course)
