WHY POETIZE

Blog Posted:8/11/2021 3:13:00 PM

Constance's quote (from  my ' poetics an 'observation'  blog below)(I am not measured by any other persons opinion) raises a pertinent 'raison- d' etre , about both poetizing itself & to a lesser extent   contests & comments & 'views'

Brian, thanks so much for using my quoted line. Contest wins once were everything to me and if I did not place it was like a rejection of not just my poem but of me. Which was silly, of course. Poetry Soup is the best poetry school in the world, IMHO, and has taught me so much about writing poetry but has helped me as a person to be able to lose with grace. And also to write for the love of it, if you are not writing because you love it then this is a job. I love the contests for the inspiration they provide and if I place I am delighted and if I don't I created a poem that I like for my collection ~ peace and tranquility _Constance

Yes Constance I think a PS poet gets to that point of maturity where impulse makes he/she write as a 'release' of innate creativity.I like to read such giftings ,my 'contests' are thus arranged to so facilitate & meet my 'craving'
Date: 8/12/2021 1:24:00 AM
Of course,by the very nature of entering a contest we are inviting someone elses 'measure'

The ‘framework’ of the reader and writer cannot be expected to match at an emotional-intellectual level. As such, it’s the poets choice to improve ot shrug at placements and comments. Spiritually, we evolve if N/A results don’t impact us, so that’s one advantage right there!

In my early days (2007) I won 75$ contest run by owner Mark P( he did that kinda thing then) & was the key barnabas 'recognition ' that prompted the learning curve mentioned below.

For my part ...in my early few years here(learning curve)peer opinions were an essential sounding board & one poet here in particular ,by suggesting I move on to longer forms was the springboard to my finding my poetic usp style (Cheers Debbie)

We are not vain -- we need to develop a critical eye for our work, even if we measure our progress against those of others.

If you are referring to Ma Debbie, I am with you one hundred percent! She single handedly dragged me into the light with her unapologetic comments on my first halting steps of haiku, and it stuck. Yes, we do tend to view other poet's work against our own experience. How often have we thought to ourselves that we could do better than the winner in a contest (here and elsewhere)?
